The CARES, CRRSAA, and ARP financial aid grants to students may be used for any component of the student’s cost of attendance or for emergency costs that arise due to the coronavirus, such as tuition, food, housing, health care (including mental health care), or child care. Accordingly, the following information must appear in a format and location that is easily accessible to the public.
1. An acknowledgement that the institution signed and returned to the department the Certification and Agreement and the assurance that the institution has used, or intends to use, the applicable amount of funds designated under the CRRSAA and ARP (a)(1) programs to provide emergency financial aid grants to students.
RESPONSE: Ferrum College signed and returned to the department the Certification and Agreement on May 4, 2020, to receive the CARES Act funding. No other application was necessary to receive the additional HEERF funding under CRRSAA or ARP. The College used $164,671.37 during March and used the remaining $719,098.63 from ARP in April 2022 to provide emergency financial aid grants to students. The College has used the designated amount of $1,673,616 from CARES and CRRSAA to provide emergency financial aid grants to students. The College has also used $1,318,315 from ARP to provide emergency financial aid grants to students during fall 2021.
2. The total amount of funds that the institution will receive or has received from the department pursuant to the institution’s Certification and Agreement for emergency financial aid grants to students.
RESPONSE: Ferrum College has been allocated $3,875,701 from the department pursuant to the College’s Certification and Agreement for emergency financial aid grants to students. This total includes $884,859 from ARP that the college received on March 30, 2022. Also included in this total are $1,317,226 from ARP, $836,808 from CRRSAA as well as $836,808 from the CARES Act in prior quarters.
3. The total amount of emergency financial aid grants distributed to students.
RESPONSE: The total amount of emergency financial aid grants distributed to students for the quarter ending March 31, 2022, was $164,671.37. The remaining $719,098.63, which was provided by ARP, was distributed on April 1, 2022. Also distributed on April 1, 2022, was $9,971.00 in funds that were distributed in prior periods but not cashed by recipients despite numerous contacts. The College distributed $1,318,315 from the ARP (a)(1) portion prior to this quarter. The College distributed a total of $836,850 from the CRRSAA (a)(1) allocation, which included $42.00 from the institution portion prior to this quarter.
In addition, $836,808 was distributed to students under the CARES Act prior to this quarter.
4. The estimated total number of students at the institution who are eligible to receive emergency financial aid grants to students.
RESPONSE: The estimated total number of students at Ferrum College eligible to receive emergency financial aid grants to students since March 2020 was 1,635 for the quarter ending March 31, 2022.
5. The total number of students who have received an emergency financial aid grant to students.
RESPONSE: The total number of students who have received an emergency financial aid grant to students for the quarter ending March 31, 2022, is 222. These students applied some or all of their funds to their student account. 663 students received a check for some or all of their funds on April 1, 2022. A nonduplicated student count of 770 received their funds in March or April, 2022.

RESPONSE: For the quarter ending March 31, 2022, Ferrum College allocated the grant amount to eligible students who were enrolled in the spring 2022 semester. The College intends to use the designated amount of $883,770 from ARP in the spring 2022 to provide emergency financial aid grants to students. The College has used the designated amount of $1,673,616 from CARES and CRRSAA to provide emergency financial aid grants to students. The College has also used $1,318,315 from ARP to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Students during fall 2021.

We continue to hope that you and your families are well and safe during this uncertain time.
This correspondence is an update to the letter dated May 12, 2020, regarding the disbursement of emergency grants for students as part of the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund. Disbursements for eligible full-time students occurred mid-May. Disbursements for part-time students were delayed until June 19, 2020, to allow further review of eligibility status. Upon further review, we determined that some part-time students, including dual enrolled students, were not eligible to receive grant funds. Because our original calculation for the amount each student would receive included these students, we have approximately $2,300.00 of funding available for a few additional small emergency grants.
If you previously received an emergency grant from the College and have had expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to the coronavirus (including eligible expenses under a student’s cost of attendance, such as food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, and child care) that exceed the amount that you received from the first disbursement, please send your request for additional funds along with supporting documentation to my attention at the address below. The CARES Act, signed into law by President Trump on March 27, 2020, provides $2 trillion in broad-based economic relief in response to the COVID-19 national pandemic. The act includes $14 billion for all sectors of higher education to provide direct assistance to institutions of higher education to respond to student and campus needs related to the crisis. Ferrum College signed and returned the Certification and Agreement to the Department of Education on May 5, 2020. The act directs that half of the funds received by Ferrum College must be used for emergency grants for students who are eligible for federal financial aid. Ferrum College received $836,808 to distribute as emergency grants for students.
Approximately 900 Ferrum College students were eligible to participate in programs under Section 484 in Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and thus eligible to receive financial aid grants under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act. Of the approximately 900 students eligible to participate, 865 students will receive the grant.
In determining the grant amount for each student, the College used the following formula:
DOE requires that the student funds be used to cover expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to the coronavirus (including eligible expenses under a student’s cost of attendance, such as food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, and child care).
Once the College receives the funds from the DOE, we will work diligently to provide the grant to our students in the form of a check. We hope to complete these transactions within the next three weeks.
