Career development

Your journey at Ferrum College will be filled with opportunities inside and outside the classroom. You will also start your journey to prepare yourself for a successful life after Ferrum College.

Career Development is not just for seniors! The staff helps students find summer jobs, internships, and volunteer opportunities that, in turn, help students make informed decisions leading to positive employment and/or graduate school choices.

Our staff is here to assist you in every step along the way. From discernment through internships, resume and interviewing skills, and gainful employment or pursuing education beyond Ferrum. We are dedicated to walking this journey with you even after your time as a Panther.


Career Exploration

FOCUS-2 is a self-paced career guidance tool designed to help you discover and explore career options that match your interests, personality, values and skills.

  • How to Create Your Student User Account in FOCUS-2
    • Log into the FOCUS-2 website
    • Select “If you need to create new account, click here.”
    • Enter the following Access Code: panther
    • Enter your personal information being sure to select a user name and password that you will remember easily.
    • Please Note: Usernames and Passwords are Case Sensitive.

Whether you are exploring multiple majors or searching for information about your chosen field, this site will help you connect majors to careers. Learn about the typical career areas and the types of employers that hire people with each major, as well as strategies to make you a more marketable candidate. Continue your research on majors and careers through the websites provided.

The Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH) is a career guide from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) that provides information on hundreds of occupations in the United States.

A free online database that helps students, job seekers, businesses, and workforce development professionals understand the world of work in the United States. The O*NET focuses on transferable skills and uses a standard classification system that links to labor market data.

Handshake

  • Activating your Handshake Account
    • Click on the Sign-In link in the upper right-hand corner of the Ferrum College home page.
    • Click on the Handshake icon.
    • You will need to use your Ferrum College credentials to sign in.
    • You will be prompted to answer some demographic questions and to complete your profile. You will also be asked to upload your resume, but that is not required to complete your profile.

Completing Your Profile:

Handshake will give you personalized job recommendations based on the information you provide on your profile—so you can find jobs and internships that are right for you.
Recruiters are five times more likely to proactively reach out to you with job opportunities and event invitations if your profile is complete.

  • Ferrum College Student Employment and Work Study positions
    • Click on the “Jobs” link at the top left-hand corner of the page
    • In the search box, enter “Ferrum”
    • You will receive a list of all the open work-study positions that have been posted. Keep checking back for new postings
  • Applying for a Position
    • Once you find a position you are interested in, click the “Apply Externally” button (red).
    • You will be taken to Ferrum College’s Work Study Application form.
    • Please make sure that you note the following information from the role description, because you will need it to complete your application: Position Title and Department.
    • If you are applying for more than one position, you will need to fill out an application for each.

Hiration’s online resume and cover letter builder lets you create professional-looking materials with the help of an AI assistant in just a few short steps. The platform also provides feedback on your LinkedIn profile, enabling you to boost your online presence!

  1. Sign up for a FREE account using your Ferrum College email at: ferrum.hiration.com
  2. Choose a design, customize the layout and utilize the AI Review and Job Match for instant feedback. For your resume we recommend using the Ferrum Resume Template. 
  3. If you need help, check out Hiration’s step by step FAQ guide.
  4. Download your resume or cover letter. Some designs allow you to download a PDF or a Word document. Either way you can still edit and refine your document. 
  5. Have Career Development review it! Though Hiration is a tool to help support in the creation and design of your application materials, it is not a replacement for a resume or cover letter review. Users are encouraged to make an appointment with the career development office via: lholden@ferrum.edu  for another review.
