The sustainability program challenges students to think critically to explore solutions to current environmental issues by including not only the environment, but also economic and social aspects. Students earn a sustainability certificate by completing 10 hours of core courses. For the sustainability minor, 8 additional hours of courses are required that focus on sustainability and related topics.

The Ferrum Green Team is an experiential course that provides a formal way to get involved with projects that will make Ferrum College a more environmentally sustainable place to study and live. Students design, implement, and evaluate projects meant to improve environmental awareness, conditions, policies and behaviors on the Ferrum College campus.
This course introduces ecological principles, focusing primarily on diversity, change, and succession or resource cycling. Readings, class activities, and student projects demonstrate the benefits of integrating science, the humanities, and the arts to educate children and the community about the environment.
This capstone course integrates the specific skills and knowledge learned in the Environmental Sustainability program with an emphasis on applying, synthesizing and evaluating economic, environmental, political and social aspects of the field.
