The media and communication major is for students who are interested in pursuing careers and further education in such areas as radio and television broadcasting, multimedia journalism, public relations, corporate communications, audio reproduction, filmmaking, and online media creation. The strengths of Ferrum College’s media and communication major is the amount of one-on-one instruction students receive from their professors, and our focus on strong writing and message design skills.
Ferrum Radio began playing regularly in the cafeteria and Panther Grounds, playing a wide range of music. Several students, faculty, and staff contributed recorded announcements about the Ferrum College campus community, whether they gave weekly reminders about upcoming Panther home games or weekly updates to the Fitness Center class schedule, or just single event announcements; the intent is to produce a sense of community for campus visitors and for the staff, faculty, and students.
Media and Communication is composed of three emphasis areas that allow students to focus their study.
Create and present a radio program. They often interview guests, take calls from listeners, promote products or local events, and manage station contests.
They work with creative ideas from the director and approve production costs. They spot and solve potential problems throughout the production process.
Write and develop screenplays for film or TV. They do this either based on an original idea, by adapting an existing story into a screenplay, or by joining an existing project.
Create and maintain a positive public image for the individuals, groups, or organizations they represent. They craft media releases and develop social media programs to shape public perception of their clients and to increase awareness of each client’s work and goals.
