Ferrum College and Franklin County High School Showcase Start on Success Program

03/11/2025

Ferrum, VA, March 11, 2025 – Building on the ongoing success of their collaboration on the Start on Success program (SOS), Ferrum College and Franklin County High School organized an outcomes-focused showcase at the College on Monday, March 10, for educational leaders interested in adopting the program for their own learning centers. Designed to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and real-world applications, the SOS Program offers high school students with the opportunity to engage in high-quality, work-based learning and skill-building experiences.

Attendees of the showcase, including officials from the Virginia Department of Education, Virginia Commonwealth University, and nearby Virginia public school systems, enjoyed a detailed, student-led tour of various campus locations currently hosting students enrolled in the program, such as Stanley Library, Titmus Agricultural Center, and the Hank Norton Athletic Center. At each location, the students highlighted their achievements, shared opportunities, and answered questions about their experiences within the program.

SOS students enroll in a special section of Ferrum College’s Introduction to Service Learning course, which allows them to earn dual enrollment credit. In this application of the internship-based program, students collaborate with college employees in a field that interests them or one they wish to pursue after graduation. They become familiar with working on a college campus, the interview process, and the opportunities available to college students.

Officials in attendance expressed positive feedback regarding Ferrum College and Franklin County’s approach and execution of the program. They were also excited about the possibility of hosting an initiative that prepares students for workforce demands and ensures they graduate with a solid educational foundation, along with valuable skills and experience.

“The Start on Success Program represents a powerful partnership between Ferrum College and Franklin County High School, providing invaluable opportunities for high school students to gain hands-on experience through internships and service learning,” said Ferrum College President Mirta Martin. “This program fosters academic development and strengthens our community by equipping the next generation with the tools they need for professional success. We are thrilled to welcome these bright young minds to the Panther Nation. We appreciate the opportunity to support these students as they embark on their academic and professional growth journey.”
