What is work-study?

Work-study is a federal program that provides part-time employment to students attending institutions of higher education who need the earnings to help meet their costs of postsecondary education. It provides jobs on campus and allows some students receiving federal work-study assistance (FWS) to participate in community service activities. All students who complete the FAFSA and are eligible for need-based aid are considered for a work-study position.

Students traditionally work 5 to 13 hours per week in a variety of settings, such as faculty and administrative offices, food services, the library, science labs, facility services, and maintenance shops. Funds are provided by the FWS program and various college programs. Federal work-study funds can be paid directly to the student for hours completed. Renewability is based on full-time enrollment and satisfactory academic progress.

Below is an overview of the process for applying for student employment. For further information, go to the page on Student Employment or visit the Student Employment office in the Carter Center.
