Hello, folks! I go by Whitney, I use she or they pronouns, and I graduated from Ferrum College in 2011 with a Bachelor’s degree in English. At Ferrum, I served on several committees, participated in grant-funded research, performed in a wide variety of musical ensembles, and even had the challenge of completing the Boone Honors Program’s first thesis project.
My honors thesis was a study of feminist dystopian novels entitled “Perverse Piety: Criticism of Christian Extremism in The Handmaid’s Tale, The Gate to Women’s Country, andThe Fifth Sacred Thing.” The honors program and thesis project helped me process my personal values and experiences and prepared me for pursuit of an advanced degree.
After I graduated from Ferrum, I earned my Master’s degree in English Literature and a post-baccalaureate certificate in Women’s and Gender Studies in 2013.
In my professional life, I have worked for the federal TRiO Student Support Services program, a grant-funded endeavor dedicated to making a college degree more accessible to first generation and low income students, as well as students with disabilities. I now work for UNCG supporting students facing academic challenges like Academic Suspension.
Over time, I have found that my drive to engage with narratives of trauma and social justice plus my experience supporting students drives me to pursue a career in counseling. Currently, I am pursuing my license in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, and I am excited for what the future holds.
