An introduction to the philosophy and history of criminal justice, and the development and operation of criminal justice agencies in the United States.
This course explores the development and functions of the American correctional system. The focus of this course will be on the functions of punishment and rehabilitation; historical and cross-cultural approaches to punishment, deterrence, and rehabilitation; and current theories and practices within correctional institutions.
The focus of this course will be on the definitions and structure of criminal law, as well as defenses and excuses to criminal liability. Students at the conclusion of the course will be able to determine what conduct is “criminal” and understand the public policy considerations that underlie these definitions.
