Ferrum College Professor Dan Caston was Elected to the Foundation of the Virginia Recreation and Parks Society

FERRUM, Virginia, January 20, 2025 — On January 8, 2025, the Foundation of the Virginia Recreation and Park Society (VRPS) announced the election of three new members to its Board of Directors and Ferrum College Associate Professor of Recreation Leadership Dan Caston was elected to serve on the board.

The Foundation of the VRPS has as its core mission the strengthening and enhancement of parks and recreation through scholarships and professional development. Through a tiered giving structure, the Foundation is positioned to increase its reserve, enhancing the level at which we fund scholarships, continuing education, and other needs of our profession. As we develop a culture of generosity, we desire to Create a Legacy that will support the Foundation for future generations of students and professionals.

Caston is an accomplished educator, outdoor enthusiast, and sustainability advocate with over three decades of professional experience. Holding a Ph.D. in Sustainability Education from Prescott College, he specializes in outdoor and experiential education, emphasizing transformative learning and environmental stewardship. As a Professor of Recreation Leadership at Ferrum, he teaches a wide array of courses, including Recreation Theory, Risk Management, and Special Events Planning and Management.

Through initiatives like college scholarships, we can empower the next generation of professionals, providing them with the resources and confidence to pursue their passions and make a difference.”

Beyond academia, he has served in leadership roles, such as Chair of Ferrum’s Business and Social Sciences Division and Coordinator of the Ferrum Outdoors program, where he developed innovative outdoor activities and sustainability initiatives. His professional contributions include co-founding an indoor climbing facility, facilitating ropes courses, and directing therapeutic outdoor programs for youth. A published author and conference presenter, Dan’s work explores the intersections of nature, education, and transformation, inspiring individuals to embrace the power of the outdoors.
