Ferrum College Blood Drive Exceeds Goal, Demonstrating Strong Community Support

FERRUM, VA, March 27, 2026 — A recent campus blood drive hosted by Ferrum College Nursing in partnership with the American Red Cross proved to be a resounding success, surpassing expectations and highlighting the generosity of the Ferrum community.

Held on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, in Vaughn Chapel, the drive brought together students, faculty, staff, and local residents in support of a shared, lifesaving mission. A total of 33 appointments were scheduled, with 25 individuals registering to donate. Of those, 20 units of blood were successfully collected—exceeding the goal of 17 units and achieving 118% of the target based on previous spring drives.

Five individuals were deferred, but organizers emphasized that even attempted donations contribute to the overall effort and awareness surrounding the ongoing need for blood.

“You should be very, very proud of everyone’s efforts,” said Douglas Rubel, account manager II with the American Red Cross. “Thank you for your continuing support of our humanitarian mission.”

Ferrum College President Mirta Martin praised the campus community for its compassion and commitment to service. “This remarkable achievement reflects the very heart of Ferrum College—people coming together to care for others in meaningful and impactful ways,” said Martin. “Our students, faculty, staff, and community members continue to demonstrate that even the simplest act of giving can make a profound difference.”

Students and faculty involved in the event reflected on both its impact and the sense of community it fostered.

“Yesterday’s blood drive held on Ferrum’s campus served as a potent reminder of what it means to genuinely care for one another,” said Jeffrey Medley, a junior nursing student. “Giving blood is such a simple act, but it has the power to save many lives… It was more than just a successful drive; it was an example of a campus that shows up, offers support, and truly makes a difference.”

Associate Professor of Nursing Suzanne Bowser also praised the experience. “Volunteering at the blood drive was fun! We were able to meet both students and members of the community. The Red Cross staff were great to work with and said that this was one of their favorite places to take donations. I am a regular blood donor and appreciate the opportunity to donate where I work.”

The success of the blood drive underscores Ferrum College’s ongoing commitment to service, hands-on learning, and community engagement—core values that continue to shape student experiences both inside and outside the classroom.
