My name is Morgan McPherson Dowdy. I graduated from Ferrum College in December 2017 as a Boone Honors Program member and a Health Sciences major. I am also a member of the Alpha Chi National College Honor Society. Since my junior year of high school, I knew I wanted to be a physical therapist. I spent my time at Ferrum working towards that goal. I am so thankful that I chose Health Sciences as my major. The seminar course series more than prepared me for the level of research I can expect in graduate school. However, the internship, required and provided through the Health Sciences major, is where I benefited the most. My internship gave me the opportunity to fall even more in love with my career path. I was able to split my 400 hours between two different settings. In both settings, I realized how amazing and fulfilling the career could be. It made me even more sure of the path I had been taking for the past four to five years.
While attending Ferrum, I spent a significant amount of my time at my job. This in turn did not leave much time for me to be involved at Ferrum, and that I regret. However, this job has allowed me to be self- sufficient since the age of 18. That is something I do not regret. I have been able to save money to begin paying off my student loans, and I bought my first home in October 2017 (two months before my Ferrum graduation). I am proud to say that I have been able to put myself through school while also working towards my career and life goals.
Recently, all my hard work paid off! I was accepted to my top pick of physical therapy programs, Radford University Department of Physical Therapy, in May 2018. Morgan’s doctorate was awarded by Radford in May 2021, and she began her current job at Bassett Physical Therapy two weeks later.
