Open Positions

Test Proctor

The Hourly Test Proctor is a crucial, part-time position responsible for maintaining the integrity, security, and fairness of all administered exams, including academic make-up tests, quizzes, and accommodated exams for students with Academic Accommodations, in compliance with Ferrum College and official testing agency policies. This is an excellent opportunity for detail-oriented, reliable individuals seeking flexible hours during the academic year.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Test Proctor will report to the designated supervisor and perform the following duties:

Test Administration and Security

  • Maintain a Secure Environment: Ensure the testing room is quiet, free from unauthorized materials, and monitored throughout the entire testing period.
  • Verify Identity: Check and confirm the identity of all examinees using a valid photo ID (e.g., Ferrum College ID or government-issued ID) before distributing any materials.
  • Distribute and Collect Materials: Accurately distribute and collect all test booklets, answer sheets, scratch paper, and approved materials, meticulously counting them before and after the exam.
  • Enforce Rules: Clearly communicate and strictly enforce all exam rules, regulations, and time limits to all test-takers consistently and fairly.
  • Monitor Students: Actively and consistently observe students to prevent academic dishonesty and unauthorized use of electronic devices or materials.

Logistical and Administrative Support

  • Prepare Testing Station: Set up and troubleshoot computers and any necessary software or materials for both paper and computer-based exams.
  • Handle Accommodations: Administer exams for students with documented accommodations (e.g., extended time, reduced distraction environment) as directed.
  • Document Irregularities: Promptly and accurately record any suspicious behavior, rule violations, or technical issues on a formal incident report and notify the supervisor immediately.
  • Maintain Confidentiality: Handle all confidential test materials, student information, and academic records with the highest level of discretion and security.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (College coursework preferred).
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule based on testing center needs, which may include mornings, afternoons, or occasional evenings.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow detailed, strict instructions and procedures without deviation.
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent observation skills.
  • Must be reliable, punctual, and maintain a professional, impartial demeanor at all times.
  • Basic computer literacy and comfort with general office technology (printers, scanners, email).

Preferred Skills

  • Previous experience as a test proctor, invigilator, or monitor in an academic or professional setting.
  • Experience in a college environment or working with students.
  • Familiarity with procedures for students receiving disability-related testing accommodations.

admissions counselor

Position Overview:

The admissions counselor works under the general direction of the Senior Director of Admissions and will manage a recruitment territory for Ferrum College. The admissions counselor will be responsible for the successful recruitment and enrollment of prospective students within their territory, including, but not limited to prospective student communication, attendance at college fairs, high school visits, and on and off campus recruiting events. The admissions counselor will also be responsible for general office duties as assigned.


Job Functions

  • Territory communication management including, but not limited to phone calls, texting, email communication, birthday cards, personal notes and general student communication
  • Attend college fairs, high school visits, and community events to promote the college and recruit students
  • Build relationships with prospective students, parents, school counselors, and community organizations
  • Collect, review, and evaluate admission applications, transcripts, and other required admission materials
  • Collaborate with other offices on campus to ensure successful transition of enrolled students
  • Create and maintain relationships with parents, students, guidance counselors, coaches, and other campus constituents
  • Assist with the mentoring and training of new counselor hires

Electrician

Primary Purpose

The Electrician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, inspection, and repair of electrical systems across campus facilities, ensuring safe, reliable, and code-compliant operations. This role supports academic, residential, and administrative buildings, contributing to a safe and functional learning environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Install, maintain, and repair electrical wiring, fixtures, equipment, and control systems in accordance with NEC and local codes.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on electrical systems, including lighting, power distribution, and emergency systems backup systems.
  • Install, inspect, test, and maintain fire alarm systems to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Troubleshoot electrical issues and perform timely repairs to minimize downtime.
  • Collaborate with HVAC, plumbing, and general maintenance teams on cross-trade projects.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and system updates.
  • Ensure compliance with safety protocols, lockout/tagout procedures, and OSHA regulations.
  • Support campus events with temporary power setups and electrical needs.
  • Respond to after-hours emergencies as part of an on-call rotation.

 Minimum Qualifications (Include skill requirements in addition to any relevant education):

High school diploma or equivalent; completion of a recognized electrical apprenticeship program preferred.

  • Valid state electrician’s certification.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience in commercial or institutional electrical work.
  • Strong knowledge of NEC, OSHA safety standards, and energy-efficient practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical diagrams.
  • Proficiency with electrical testing equipment and tools.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with campus or multi-building facility systems.
  • Familiarity with building automation systems (BAS) and energy management controls.
  • Knowledge of both high-voltage and low-voltage systems, including fire alarms, security, and data
    cabling.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and work from ladders, lifts, or confined spaces.
  • Exposure to varying weather conditions when working on exterior systems.
  • Work may require standing, bending, and climbing for extended periods.

seasonal visit coordinator

The Visit Coordinator work collaboratively with enrollment staff, campus constituents, and the community. This position processes timesheet approval, and recruits, hires, trains with assistance as needed. Coordinates daily tour coverage. This position supports the office administratively. In addition to project responsibilities, the Visit Coordinator welcomes students and families to the office and provides information about office programming, campus events, and general information about the campus community, admission, and the community of Ferrum and other surrounding communities.

  • Manages the Admissions phone and overall visit experience.
  • Manages Admissions email.
  • Responsible for main campus switchboard.
  • Supports the office administratively.
  • In addition to project responsibilities, the Visit Coordinator welcomes students and families to the office and provides information about office programming, campus events, and general information about the campus community, admission, and local and surrounding communities.
  • Schedule Admission Ambassadors for tours.
  • Assist in managing day-to-day scheduling needs via scheduling software, email, and phone.
  • Supervise student workers for Office of Admissions.
  • Coordinate and manage visit events and all daily student visits with assistance as needed.
  • Manage Student Employment recruiting, hiring, scheduling, and timesheet approval for Office of Admissions.
  • Partner with the Student Employment Office to ensure all processes and procedures are in place for the student office assistants.
  • Oversee the scheduling of group tours including school groups, partner, and community-based organizations.
  • Support in the scheduling of events and visits in Wufoo and Recruit.
  • Organize the residence hall show rooms.
  • This position includes some evenings and weekends.
  • Ensures an excellent visit experience by preparing and giving presentations (as a back-up to the admission counseling staff) stocks brochures and shelves.
  • Assists in the interviewing, selection, and scheduling of Admission Ambassadors; keeps ambassadors updated on new information to be passed along to visitors; ensures ambassadors have well-maintained shirts, business cards, and nametags.

Director of Student Accounts

Primary Purpose

The Director of Student Accounts oversees all aspects of student billing, collections, and customer service related to student financial accounts. This role ensures accurate and timely processing of tuition, fees, payments, and 1098-T tax forms while maintaining compliance with institutional policies, federal regulations, and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). The Director leads the Student Accounts team and collaborates across departments to support institutional goals for student success, financial stewardship, and retention.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Student Billing & Account Management:

  • Oversee the creation and distribution of tuition and fee bills.
  • Ensure accurate posting of charges, payments, refunds, and financial aid.
  • Manage third-party billing, payment plans, and sponsored accounts.
  • Coordinate student account holds and clearances with the Registrar and Financial Aid offices.
  • Oversee the accurate and timely processing of IRS Form 1098-T for all eligible students.

Collections & Compliance:

  • Lead efforts on accounts receivable and collections, including internal follow-up and coordination with external agencies.
  • Ensure compliance with FERPA, PCI, Title IV regulations, and institutional policies.
  • Monitor and manage delinquent accounts and recommend write-offs in accordance with policy.

Customer Service:

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for escalated student and parent inquiries.
  • Promote a student-centered approach to resolving account issues.
  • Maintain clear communication regarding billing schedules, payment deadlines, refund policies, and tax documentation.

Leadership & Operations:

  • Supervise and train Student Accounts staff.
  • Develop and improve policies and procedures to ensure efficiency and accuracy.
  • Maintain and enhance system capabilities (e.g., Banner, Colleague, Workday, or other SIS).

Reporting & Reconciliation:

  • Reconcile student account balances and coordinate closely with Finance for month-end and year-end processes.
  • Prepare reports on accounts receivable aging, student balances, and collection performance.
  • Ensure accurate year-end reporting of tuition and fee data required for IRS Form 1098-T.

Collaboration:

  • Work closely with Financial Aid, Registrar, Admissions, Housing, and IT departments to ensure integrated student service delivery.
  • Participate in campus-wide initiatives related to student retention, affordability, and success.

  Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Three or more years of progressive experience in student accounts, bursar, or similar role, preferably in higher education.
  • Experience with student information systems (e.g., Ellucian Colleague, Banner, Workday, or similar).
  • Demonstrated leadership, staff supervision, and project management experience.
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and customer service skills.

 Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of payment gateways, online billing portals, and third-party collection processes.
  • Strong knowledge of federal regulations related to student accounts (e.g., Title IV, FERPA).
  • Ability to interpret and apply complex policies and regulations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial reporting tools.

On-call investigators
(seasonal status)

Primary Purpose

Ferrum College seeks impartial, experienced On-Call Investigators to conduct timely, thorough, and objective investigations into alleged violations of College policies, including Title IX, harassment, discrimination, and workplace misconduct. These positions exclude investigations under the Student Code of Conduct, which are managed by the Division of Student Affairs, though collaboration with that office may be required. On-call investigators report directly to the Title IX Coordinator and work in close coordination with the College’s General Counsel and Office of Human Resources, depending on the nature of the complaint.

This is an as-needed, hourly position based on institutional caseloads.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct prompt, impartial investigations into complaints involving Title IX, discrimination, harassment, and other policy violations (excluding Student Code of Conduct cases).
  • Interview complainants, respondents, and witnesses in a respectful, trauma-informed, and procedurally sound manner.
  • Gather, analyze, and organize relevant documentation and evidence.
  • Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, institutional policies, and due process protections throughout the investigation process.
  • Maintain accurate and comprehensive records of interviews, evidence, communications, and findings.
  • Prepare well-written, thorough investigation reports detailing timelines, evidence, and factual findings.
  • Maintain strict neutrality and avoid conflicts of interest.
  • Participate in trainings related to Title IX, civil rights, FERPA, and trauma-informed practices as required.

Assistant athletic trainer

Ferrum College, an NCAA Division II institution located in Ferrum, Virginia, is seeking a motivated, energetic, and passionate individual to fill the position of Assistant Athletic Trainer. This is a full-time, 12-month position. Ferrum College, an NCAA Division III institution located in Ferrum, Virginia, is seeking a motivated, energetic, and passionate individual to fill the position of Assistant Athletic Trainer. This is a full-time 12-month position that reports directly to the Head Athletic Trainer.

Primary Purpose:

The Assistant Athletic Trainer will assist in providing medical services for Ferrum’s 20 varsity programs. The successful candidate will be responsible for aiding the Head Athletic Trainer in the prevention, evaluation, treatment, referral, and rehabilitation of injuries and illnesses to our student-athletes. The Assistant Athletic Trainer will ensure a culture of compliance with all NCAA Division II, Conference Carolinas, and Ferrum College rules and regulations, and will ensure that all staff members and student-athletes adhere to these regulations. Finally, the successful candidate will serve in an administrative capacity as needed and directed by the Head Athletic Trainer and/or the Director of Athletics.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide daily health care for Ferrum College student-athletes.
  • Maintain appropriate athletic training room operations as directed by the Head Athletic Trainer.
  • Record and maintain appropriate medical records for treatment given through appropriate athletic training software.
  • Provide daily coverage for all practice and competition, including some travel responsibilities, of assigned sports (sport assignments to be determined).
  • Assist with inventory maintenance and budget.
  • Serve in an administrative capacity as needed and directed by the Head Athletic Trainer and/or the Director of Athletics.
  • Serve on department and campus-wide committees as requested, as well as other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

The Assistant Athletic Trainer will have a supervisory role over work study students and student interns.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree; BOC certification; eligible for State of Virginia Athletic Training Licensure; current Emergency Cardiac Care Certified (ECC) certification; basic computer and Microsoft Office skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s Degree; experience working in a coeducational collegiate environment; two or more years of experience as a certified athletic trainer; experience with the Athletic Trainer System; Additional certifications are desirable (First AID/CPR instructor, reputable strength and conditioning certification, Graston technique, FMS, etc.).

Required Licenses:

BOC certification; eligible for State of Virginia Athletic Training Licensure; current Emergency Cardiac Care Certified (ECC) certification; Current and valid driver’s license required.

On-Call Drivers (Ongoing/recurring seasonal status)

Ongoing search

Ferrum College is accepting applications for on-call drivers to support the transportation needs of the college community. Vehicles used will be provided by the College. Responsibilities may include transporting students on College-sponsored field trips, special events, or other off-campus opportunities; performing routine fueling and pre-trip inspections of vehicles; and maintaining record-keeping. This position requires some overnight travel. A background check and driving check are required.

Applicants must be over 21 years of age; have a current driver’s license and good driving record; have the ability to drive safely in all types of traffic conditions in both rural and urban settings; and be willing to submit to post-offer and annual background checks, including Motor Vehicle Report checks. Drivers may be required to undergo initial and periodic drug testing. Financial Aid counselor

A.  Purpose:
To Assist the vice President for enrollment management and sr. director of student financial services in administering of financial aid programs.
B.  Duties:
Financial Aid Responsibilities

1.Counsel students and parents on the availability of financial aid and assist families with completion of all applications/ forms. Counseling assignment to be determined by the Director of Financial Aid.

2. Award new and returning students, including data entry of awards. Responsible for processing all aspects of student files, including but not limited to VT AG review and approval, Verification review and updates, Invalid Applications, aid appeals, and processing of all student loans. Counselor will assist with data entry of applications, credit checks, and follow-up request when necessary.

3. Serve as receptionist for the Financial Aid Office. Answer incoming telephone calls and assist callers with their QUESTIONS And/or forward calls when necessary. Greet visitors to the office and assist them with their questions and/or schedule appointments. Calls received before 4:30 p.m. will be contacted the same business day.

4. Complete all exit counseling requirements for students who do not enroll. Update ECMC/Horizons with exit information for timely counseling of loan obligations.

5. Keep current with developments and trends in the Financial Aid field by participating in continuing education courses, PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS and seminars, attending conferences, reading current literature and maintaining professional contacts in the community.

6. Prepare for and assist with student registration, Open House, and other College events. Speak at High School Nights as requested Administrative Responsibilities 1. Ensure that all daily office functions and procedures are completed in the absence of the Director. 2. Responsible for reporting through query and assisting with all reporting functions when needed
