This year we kicked off a new Ferrum tradition. It started with traditional Spanish-language carols by the Spanish students, who sang in various parts of campus and ended up at the library. There were displays about diverse holiday customs, plus cookies and hot chocolate for everyone. Then the choir put on a spectacular concert, followed by the lighting of the trees outside the library, accompanied by the marching band. Despite the chilly weather everyone had a great time!
This past fall we had a new Gateway section focused on helping international students adapt to life at Ferrum College and create community. This course was in collaboration with Ferrum Outdoors, so it was full of fun adventures!
A group of Ferrum students, some from the U.S. and some from abroad, participated in an excursion to Roanoke for the celebration of Korean Alphabet Day at the Taubman Museum.
In October, Dr. Sagasti Suppes went to Russia to represent Ferrum College and Roanoke Valley Sister Cities at the Russia-U.S. Municipal Forum in Moscow. During her week in the country, she was also able to visit Roanoke’s sister city, Pskov, and to visit with students, faculty, and administrators at Pskov State University. The best part was seeing Katia and Olga, two former Ferrum exchange students.
Students traveled to Washington DC in Fall Break, and had a chance to tour the Capitol Building, see several museums, and explore Old Town Alexandria.

Hi, my name is Suzie Maines . I am from Winchester, Virginia, and I am a 2021 graduate of Ferrum College. My majors were Spanish and International Studies. The next step for me will be teaching English abroad through the CIEE program in Madrid, Spain.
I studied in Seville for Fall 2019 and in Havana, Cuba, in June 2019. Both of these experiences were absolutely life-changing and easily some of the best times I have had since coming to college. Studying abroad really helped my language skills but the experience taught me a lot in general, and I loved every second of it.
