The Kandinsky Trio Performs During Ferrum College’s Cultural Arts Series, September 23 at 7:30 p.m.
Ferrum College is excited to announce that The Kandinsky Trio will perform during the college's cultural arts series on September 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the Grousbeck Auditorium. The performance is free and open to the public. The Kandinsky Trio was founded in 1987 and its musicians - Elizabeth Bachelder, violin, Alan Weinstein, cello, and Benedict Goodfriend, piano - have established themselves as one of America's foremost chamber ensembles.

Greer donates historical book collection to BRI
Ibby Greer, widow of T. Keister Greer, is donating more than 1,000 books from her husband's personal library to a new research archive at the Blue Ridge Institute at Ferrum College.

Internationally Acclaimed Dancer Comes to Ferrum College for Special Recital on September 16th
Padmarani Rasiah Cantu, an internationally acclaimed and versatile dancer, is coming to Ferrum College to perform an East Indian Dance recital on September 16th in the Sale Theatre. The performance begins at 7 p.m. and is open to the public.

Ferrum College’s Entire Freshman Class to Package 80,000 Meals in Three Hours for Relief Organization
Over 600 freshmen will pack the Fitness Center on the Ferrum College campus on Friday evening, August 29, th to participate in Operation Sharehouse, a volunteer, on-site mission of Stop Hunger Now, a Raleigh, North Carolina-based international hunger relief agency that is committed to ending hunger by distributing food and other lifesaving aid to children and families in countries all over the world.

Ferrum College freshmen package over 90,000 meals for Stop Hunger Now
From 6:30-9:30 p.m. that evening the freshmen plan to put together over 90,000 meals in packets consisting of rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and a flavoring mix that includes 21 essential vitamins and minerals. The meal packets are easy to store and transport and have a shelf life of up to 5 years.

Ferrum College Anticipates Largest Enrollment in 24 Years, Opens Third New Residence Hall in Three Years
Ferrum College will once again welcome a record number of students to campus this fall, the third consecutive year of significant enrollment increases. Ferrum expects close to 650 new students to begin classes on September 1, with total enrollment projected to be over 1,300 students for the first time in nearly a quarter century. "It is wonderful to have another year of record enrollment at Ferrum, in both the numbers of new students and returning students,” says Gilda Woods, Director of Admissions." Woods commented that this year's entering class will come from 18 states and 5 foreign countries. "So many new and exciting amenities have been added at Ferrum, and new projects are being planned all the time. Our alumni often comment that they wish they could come back to Ferrum as students now!" said Woods.

Ferrum College Scales Up its Computer Networking System to New Levels of Service, Security, and Reliability
Ferrum College has chosen Juniper Networks Inc, a high-performance network infrastructure, to rebuild its entire campus-wide network with Juniper switching, network access control (NAC) and firewall/VPN solutions. Ferrum selected Juniper to meet the demanding network requirements posed by exceptional growth in student enrollment, and to enable the college to extend 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) throughput across the network in support of advanced Voice over IP (VoIP) by fall 2009.

Ferrum College History Professor to be Featured on a New Series on The Discovery Channel September 8th
Ferrum College Professor of History, Dr. Richard Smith, will be featured on an episode of a new series that will debut on September 22nd on The Discovery Channel at 10:00pm. The show will be hosted by award-winning television personality Josh Bernstein, widely known for his popular adventure-archaeology series called “Digging for the Truth” on the History Channel. The episode featuring Dr. Smith, entitled “Africa’s El Dorado,” will focus on the history of the Saharan desert city of Timbuktu, which was the center of the gold trade between the 14th and 16th Century.

Two Ferrum College Professors, Students/Alumni Take Part in Summit at UVA to Discuss Virginia’s Water Supply
Dr. Dave Johnson and Dr. Jason Powell, along with students Austin French, Autumn Spencer and Tim Pohlad-Thomas traveled to Charlottesville to meet with representatives from the Department of Environmental Quality and other experts to talk about the quality of Virginia’s waters. They also presented the findings of their work on Smith Mountain Lake.

Ferrum College President Receives Prestigious Paul Harris Fellow Award from Local Rotary Club
On Thursday July 3rd, members of the Rocky Mount Rotary Club awarded Ferrum College President Jennifer Braaten a Paul Harris Fellow Award during the club’s annual Independence Day Festival. Braaten was honored for her role in the revitalization of the College. The Paul Harris Fellow recognition, the highest award presented in Rotary, was created in memory of Paul Harris, the founder of Rotary, as a way to show appreciation for contributions to the Foundation's charitable and educational programs.

Sanders Family Christmas opens at the Blue Ridge Dinner Theatre on the Ferrum College campus
Sanders Family Christmas opens at the Blue Ridge Dinner Theatre (BRDT) July 15th, and continues until August 2nd. Like the other two Sanders' Family musicals done by the dinner theatre, this musical features more than twenty-five Gospel and Bluegrass songs.

Ferrum Hosts 4th National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Institute
Ferrum College hosts the 4th Biennial Summer Institute for College and University Teachers, funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). The Institute runs from June 8 through July 4, 2008. The Institute at Ferrum examines Appalachian issues that link regional study to the liberal arts.

Two Exhibits Cruise Down the Crooked Road Music Trail
Southwest Virginians have an ear for music, and two new exhibits at the Blue Ridge Institute & Museum of Ferrum College showcase the long history of picking and singing in the mountains. Crooked Road Royalty and Musical Styles Along the Crooked Road are open daily in the museum’s galleries on the Ferrum College campus through February of 2009. The museum is the State Center for Blue Ridge Folklore and a major venue along the Crooked Road: Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail. Gallery admission is free.
