Meet Kayla Crawford, Class of 2016

Kayla Crawford, ‘16, followed her heart to achieve her dream of becoming an elementary school teacher. As a nontraditional student, she commuted between her home community of Willis, Virginia, and Ferrum College in order to make her dream a reality. Her goal was to teach in the neighborhood where she and her husband raise their two young children. During her final semester at Ferrum College, she completed her student teaching experience at Willis Elementary School, which is conveniently located near her home. After a year teaching full time at another school in the district, a position opened up at Willis Elementary, and she was able to transfer back to the place where she started: “The opening was teaching Pre-K. I never pictured myself as a Pre-K teacher, but Ferrum College prepared me for it. I had several internships ranging from Pre-K to 6th grade, which prepared me for all the grades I would be licensed in. My first principal even told me that my range of internships was a big incentive to hire me! Pursuing my dream of becoming a teacher was the best decision I have ever made. I LOVE my job!”
