05/14/2026

FERRUM, VA, May 14, 2026 — Ferrum College is partnering with Build Smart Institute, the Franklin County Office of Economic Development, Procon, Inc., and Virginia Housing to offer two free, hands-on summer camps in July for high school students interested in careers in construction, engineering, design, and skilled trades.

The Franklin County Future Builders Academy–Concrete Week, scheduled for July 6-13, will introduce students to the world of concrete construction through hands-on projects, interactive activities, and exposure to career opportunities in the concrete and construction industries. Participants will use real tools and materials to develop foundational trade skills and jobsite safety knowledge. The camp is sponsored by Procon, Inc., Ferrum College, and the Franklin County Office of Economic Development.

The Franklin County Future Builders Academy–Carpentry Week, scheduled for July 13-17, will focus on carpentry and craftsmanship. Students will gain hands-on experience with construction tools and materials, learn basic carpentry techniques and workplace safety practices, and work alongside experienced industry professionals. The camp is sponsored by Virginia Housing, Ferrum College, and the Franklin County Office of Economic Development.

Held on the Ferrum College campus, both immersive camps are designed for high-school-aged students and they are free for students who participate. Transportation will be provided daily from The Franklin Center in Rocky Mount to campus, and lunch will be provided for all participants.

“Our partnerships with Build Smart Institute, Franklin County Economic Development, Procon, Inc., and Virginia Housing reflect Ferrum College’s commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for young people to discover their talents and explore high-demand career pathways,” said Dr. Mirta Martin, president of Ferrum College. “These hands-on camps will empower students to gain practical experience, build confidence, and see firsthand how careers in the skilled trades and construction can make a lasting impact on their communities and futures. At the same time, participants and their families will experience the beauty of Ferrum College’s campus and gain exposure to the many academic programs, student resources, and opportunities that make our college such a special place to learn, grow, and build a future.”
