Ferrum College Board of Trustees Honors Legendary Coach Abe Naff with Resolution of Gratitude

FERRUM, VA, November 21, 2025 — “The Ferrum College Board of Trustees presented a formal resolution of gratitude to Coach Abe Naff in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to the College’s baseball program and athletic legacy. The resolution was presented during the Board’s meeting on November 21, 2025. The complete resolution can be read below.

Coach Naff served as Ferrum College’s Head Baseball Coach from 1985 to 2007, compiling a career record of 632–237–3, leading the Panthers to multiple USA South Conference titles and 10 NCAA Division III playoff appearances. Under his leadership, Ferrum produced 20 All-Americans, 67 Academic All-Conference honorees, and 22 professional baseball players.

Coach Naff also served as Ferrum College’s Director of Athletics beginning in 2004, spearheading improvements to Panther Field and press box infrastructure. In 2023, he was inducted into the Virginia Baseball Coaches Association (VBCA) Hall of Fame, becoming the first NCAA Division III coach so honored.

D. Scott Showalter ’73, chair of the Board of Trustees, said, “Coach Abe Naff’s dedication to Ferrum College and its student-athletes has been extraordinary. His leadership, mentorship, and vision have left a lasting impact that extends far beyond the baseball diamond. We are proud to honor him with this resolution and celebrate the remarkable legacy he has built.”

Mirta M. Martin, president of Ferrum College, added, “It is impossible to overstate the influence Coach Naff has had on Ferrum College. He shaped a winning baseball program and the lives of generations of young men, teaching them discipline, character, and the pursuit of excellence. We are deeply grateful for his service and proud to welcome him back home into the enduring legacy of Ferrum College Athletics.”

The Board of Trustees’ resolution, now recorded in the Board’s official meeting minutes, formally recognizes Coach Naff for his decades of selfless service, his transformational impact on the baseball program, and his lasting contributions to the College.

RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF FERRUM COLLEGE Honoring Coach Abe Naff for Distinguished Service and Legacy 
WHEREAS, Abe Naff served with distinction as Head Baseball Coach at Ferrum College from 1985 to 2007, compiling an  extraordinary career record of 632–237–3 (or as many sources note, 643–236–3), and leading the Panthers to multiple USA South Conference titles and numerous NCAA Division III playoff appearances;   
WHEREAS, under his leadership, Ferrum won USA South regular-season championships in 1990, 1992, 1993, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2007, as well as conference tournament titles in 2005 and 2007;  
WHEREAS, Coach Naff guided his teams to NCAA Division III playoff berths in 10 different seasons and, in 2007, his team came within two outs of advancing to the Division III College World Series; 
WHEREAS, during his tenure, he coached 20 All Americans, and 67 players earned Academic All-Conference honors, and 22 of his former players went on to professional baseball; 
 WHEREAS, Coach Naff ’s mentorship helped shape the career of Billy Wagner, whose own legacy now includes historic achievement: Wagner was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2025,  becoming the first NCAA Division III player ever honored; 
WHEREAS, beyond his coaching record, Coach Naff served as Ferrum College’s Director of Athletics beginning in 2004, providing visionary leadership and helping lead significant advancements to all athletic facilities, including, but not limited to, the Hank Norton Center, W. B. Adams Stadium, Panther Field, 
Norton-Tolley Press Box, and the Norton Fieldhouse;  
WHEREAS, for his sustained excellence and impact in collegiate baseball, Coach Naff was inducted into the Virginia Baseball  Coaches Association (VBCA) Hall of Fame in 2023, becoming the first NCAA Division III coach so honored.  
WHEREAS, Coach Naff ’s commitment to both athletic excellence and academic achievement exemplifies the ideals of Ferrum College, inspiring generations of student athletes to strive not only for victories, but for character, discipline, and lifelong success; 
WHEREAS, the Board expresses its gratitude to Coach Naff for his leadership, his mentorship of young men on and off the field, and his vision in strengthening Ferrum Athletics; 
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Trustees of Ferrum College formally recognizes and honors  Coach Abe Naff for his decades of selfless service, his transformational impact on our baseball program, and his lasting legacy on the College; 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this resolution be presented to Coach Abe Naff as a testament to his invaluable contributions, with the resolution recorded as part of the official minutes of the 
Ferrum College Board of Trustees meeting on the 21st day of November, 2025.
