Science Seminar to Feature Safari Adventure Presentation by Professor Emeritus Bob Pohlad

08/21/2025

FERRUM, VA, August 21, 2025 – Ferrum College Professor Emeritus Dr. Bob Pohlad will present “Cry of the Kalahari: A Safari Adventure in Botswana and Travel in South Africa” as part of the College’s science seminar series on Friday, August 22, 2025, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Garber Hall 106. The event is free and open to both the public and the campus community.

Pohlad, an accomplished photographer, traveled to Botswana and South Africa from April 25 to May 8, where he captured more than 8,000 striking images of wildlife, plants, campsites, sunsets, and fellow travelers. His safari experience included tent camping close to wildlife and other excursions across the region. During the seminar, Pohlad will share a selection of his photographs and reflect on his journey.

“Photography has allowed me to capture moments that inspire curiosity, wonder, and respect for the natural world,” Pohlad said. “Sharing these experiences is a joy, and I look forward to bringing a bit of the Kalahari to Ferrum College.”

Travel companions included former Ferrum College colleagues John and Lynda Leffler, and Mike and Kathy Mengak.

Ferrum College President Mirta Martin commented, “We are excited for Dr. Pohlad to share his incredible safari experiences with our campus community. Events like this showcase the unique ways Ferrum College connects our students and community to the broader world of science and exploration.”

The College’s science seminar series is held most Fridays and features presentations by faculty, students, alumni, and visiting lecturers. Topics range from research and career opportunities to current science issues with real-world impact.
