Ferrum, VA, June 2, 2026 — Ferrum College Football celebrated the 16th Annual Hank Norton Memorial Golf Tournament on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at Botetourt Golf & Swim Country Club in Troutville, Virginia. Generations of Ferrum football players, known proudly as the Black Hats, gathered with their supporters for a day of camaraderie, competition, and remembrance.

With beautiful weather and strong participation, 107 players took part in this year’s tournament, continuing a tradition honoring the life and legacy of legendary Ferrum football coach Hank Norton.

More than a golf tournament, the annual event celebrates Coach Hank Norton’s enduring influence on Ferrum Football and the countless lives he touched as a mentor, leader, and teacher. Known for leading with integrity and treating people the right way, Norton built a culture that continues to shape Ferrum Football today.

Adding to the day’s significance, Coach Norton’s son, Jack Norton ’90, and grandson, Jackson Norton, both participated in the tournament, underscoring the lasting family ties and deep personal connections that define the Ferrum Football community.

Former Ferrum College football standout Chris Warren ’90, who played 11 seasons in the NFL, also attended the event, joining alumni, friends, and supporters to celebrate the program and reconnect with fellow Black Hats.

“What’s really special to me right now is seeing some of the newer and younger generations join us for this golf tournament, and the tradition just keeps moving forward at a very fast pace. And everyone’s just proud to be here,” said Director of Athletics Cleive Adams ’02.

The tournament carried forward the strong momentum built in recent years and once again demonstrated the enduring strength of Ferrum Football’s Black Hats brotherhood.

“It was an awesome day to see so many different decades of Black Hats come together for one day of golf,” said Head Football Coach Kevin Sherman ’92. “We all have something in common through that black helmet, going all the way back to the Hank Norton era. It gets better every year. Seeing the different eras of alumni, hearing their stories, and bringing everybody into one room is what makes this special. This little place has made a big impact on so many lives and communities.”

Funds raised through the Hank Norton Memorial Golf Tournament directly support the Ferrum College Football program, providing resources that enhance the student-athlete experience and strengthen the program’s future as it heads into its second year of Division II football this fall.

Ferrum College President Mirta Martin praised the tournament’s impact and the commitment of Ferrum Football supporters. “The Hank Norton Memorial Golf Tournament embodies the very best of Ferrum College: tradition, loyalty, and a shared commitment to investing in our students,” Martin said. “The continued support of our Ferrum Black Hat family creates meaningful opportunities for our student-athletes and ensures that the legacy of excellence and service championed by Coach Norton continues to inspire future generations.”

The need for that support remains significant. Ferrum Football continues to seek sponsors and donors to support its summer program, which enables student-athletes to return to campus early for preseason preparation and team development. The cost to bring each player back to campus for the summer is approximately $1,000 per student, making community and alumni support critical to the program’s continued growth and success.

As Ferrum College Football looks ahead, the message remains clear: the tradition is strong, the brotherhood endures, and the commitment to building something greater than football continues to unite generations of Black Hats.

FERRUM, VA, May 28, 2026 – It’s never too early to make healthy choices for your well-being. A new free Personal Training Program started this spring at the Ferrum College Fitness Center. This initiative is co-sponsored by the Health and Human Performance Program and the Employee Wellness Program through Human Resources. It is designed to support health and wellness goals while providing valuable hands-on experience for student interns. Health and Human Performance interns assisted students, faculty, and staff in building confidence at the fitness center, setting goals, and developing sustainable workout routines.

The program was free for participants, and the commitment was a minimum of one hour per week during the spring semester. The personal student trainers were available Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. The spots were limited and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. In the spring semester, the student trainers were Bradley Viers, Payton Rausch, Javon Myers, and Jonah Harding, all seniors. Each trainer took on more than one person from the 21 registered, depending on their availability.

“I first did this with my students when I taught at another institution, and I know how valuable it was to take what they were learning in the classroom and be able to work with real people, goals, and people outside of their classmates,” said Dr. Johanna Ferguson, assistant professor of Health and Human Performance and chair of the School of Nursing and Allied Health. She created this program to give her students a hands-on internship.

The training program enables interns to create and manage their own development plan for each individual they train. Every person is different in age, in what they are trying to achieve, and in what they are physically capable of doing. “A lot of them are athletes, so that’s a different population than maybe working with adults or even students their own age who aren’t familiar with exercise,” said Ferguson.

A part of this program is giving back. The seniors draw on what they’ve learned over the past four years to help others. “Hearing the students’ excitement for the start of the training program is exciting. When students are starting and trying to do these things, it can be intimidating. With this program, it’s giving them confidence in the skills they’ve been learning and building on,” said Ferguson.

Starting or trying something new can be difficult, or even scary, especially when it can make people feel uncomfortable. “It’s getting that first session out of the way, meeting with the student trainer, and setting up the plan. It’s small, gradual steps aimed to make people feel comfortable visiting the fitness center and eventually using it independently. They are great students; they are all eager to work with anybody,” said Ferguson.

Rausch, one of the trainers, is considering a career in personal training or physical therapy after college. He says this program is giving him good experience in personal training and helping him see where he can take it in his career.

“At first, I was just doing it for my internship, but now that I’ve been involved with it, I’ve had to make plans and schedule people. It’s been really fun and opened my eyes to the world of personal training and how it makes me feel good,” said Rausch.

“I would say to people, don’t be scared; just get started. It’s a good thing to be active. Don’t worry about being judged; come out and do it. I think it’d be beneficial to everyone,” said Rausch.

What Harding wanted from this program was to take ideas from the books and classroom and put them into practice, giving him hands-on experience. He wants to help people who aren’t as active, haven’t thought about it, or are nervous, and steer them in a direction that would be rewarding for him to see them take.

“Don’t put too much pressure on yourself; you’re not going to be judged. People want to see you succeed and do better for yourself,” said Harding, on how he would encourage people to come out to the fitness center and give the training program a shot.

“I was nervous at first, but I think through the courses I’ve gotten here and rely on personal knowledge about working out. Being able to piece it all together will be beneficial to elevate people,” said Myers, on how he was feeling about taking on the role of a personal trainer.

Taking it one step at a time is the initial move when starting something new, and Myers reinforces that idea. “Take it one step at a time. I feel like once you get your foot in the door, it’ll bring in more consistency. It’ll get easier with every class,” said Myers.

Jason Powell, Associate Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness and Strategic Planning, and Justin Muse ’05, Senior Director of Admissions, have started their fitness journey with student trainer Viers. He started Powell and Muse off with a 10-to-15-minute walk/run on the treadmill to build cardio, then a light warm-up targeting the muscles they’ll use during the workout. The plan slowly builds up as Powell and Muse build strength. At the end, they do some form of core exercise and stretch to wrap up the training session. Powell and Muse both do hour-long sessions at their own pace while working toward their goals.

In many ways, two is better than one, and for Muse, having a trainer helps reinforce that old saying. “It holds me accountable, because I want to show up for them but also for myself. It puts accountability on both parties,” said Muse.

Muse offers words of encouragement to those who feel scared or hesitant about signing up for the training program. He knows nerves hold people back, but he wants people to look past the nervousness and pick a time that works for them. He doesn’t want people to worry about what others say. Everyone starts somewhere. Muse wants people to see that they are trying to become a better version of themselves.

“The fitness center is a welcoming place; everyone is there to do their thing and not judge anybody. The fitness coaches meet you where you’re at and help you set reasonable goals with a good pace,” said Powell, on what he would tell faculty, staff, and students who didn’t join the fitness program the first time around.

Viers sees this as something he wants to continue working on in the future and as a career path. He also echoes what many of his classmates have said: “It’s never too early to make healthy choices for your well-being.”

Ferrum College alumna Bernice Cobbs ’98, Special Programs Coordinator, who is an avid walker, does half marathons, and plays pickleball, has also started working with Viers. She signed up to work on her upper body strength along with her core. She’s happy that Viers pushed her beyond her limits.

“When I get to a certain spot, I want to stop, but Viers talks about how getting to your failure point is a good thing because it pushes you to go to the next level,” said Cobbs.

Cobbs thinks it’s natural for people to be nervous about training with someone who has experience. She’s had a trainer before and was a nervous wreck, wondering if she was going to do this right. Cobbs wondered whether her first trainer would give her criticism she didn’t want to hear. Viers was the opposite; he helped soothe Cobbs’ nerves and ease any worries from past experiences.

“Viers was very reassuring, but most people will be nervous, and that is natural, but do it anyway. The trainers have the skillset to get people to feel comfortable,” said Cobbs.

Cobbs’ favorite part of this training experience is knowing that she told him what areas she wanted to work on. Cobbs says that Viers agrees with her that those are areas she needs to work on. That made Cobbs feel good, knowing that she knows her body better than she thought.

The organizers plan to offer the fitness program again in future semesters, pending student interest and availability.

Ferrum, VA, May 22, 2026 — Ferrum College President Mirta M. Martin has announced the appointment of Dr. Richard Grant as the College’s Provost. He has served as interim provost since January and his appointment also includes a position as Professor of Physics.

A native of Canada, Dr. Grant holds a B.Sc. degree in physics from University of Toronto. He also earned an M.S. in aerospace, physics, and space sciences from Florida Institute of Technology, and both an M.S. and Ph.D. in physics from Old Dominion University. He has worked as a research assistant and scientist, and taught physics at Roanoke College and several other institutions.

At Roanoke College Dr. Grant served in a variety of administrative roles as well as faculty member since 1996. They include, over the past decade, Associate Vice President for Student Success, Senior Advisor to the President for Strategic Initiatives, Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College, and Director of Experiential Learning. A strong believer in the benefits of hands-on learning, he has managed a number of large grants for science facilities, research projects, and teacher training.

“I am honored and deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve as Provost of Ferrum College,” said Dr. Grant. “Ferrum’s commitment to student-centered learning, meaningful mentorship, and preparing graduates to lead lives of purpose strongly resonates with my own values. I look forward to working alongside our faculty, staff, and students to strengthen academic excellence, expand opportunities for experiential learning, and advance initiatives that support student success and institutional growth. It is a privilege to join the Panther community, and I am excited for the work ahead.”

At Roanoke College he received both the Dean’s Exemplary Teaching Award and the Dean’s Exemplary Service Award.

President Martin said, “We are profoundly grateful and excited to welcome Dr. Richard Grant to Ferrum College as our new Provost. Dr. Grant is a deeply respected scholar, visionary academic leader, and passionate advocate for student success whose career has been defined by innovation, collaboration, and an unwavering commitment to helping students discover purpose and reach their fullest potential. His extraordinary experience spanning academic affairs, student success, experiential learning, strategic planning, and transformational campus initiatives makes him uniquely equipped to lead Academic Affairs into its next chapter of growth and distinction.”

The provost is Ferrum College’s chief academic officer, and Dr. Grant will oversee all operations of the programs of study, faculty, and academic services for students. Dr. Martin added, “Dr. Grant understands the heart of higher education—that our work is ultimately about transforming lives, opening doors of opportunity, and preparing students to make meaningful contributions to the world. We are blessed and excited to welcome him to the Panther family.”

FERRUM, VA (May 18, 2026) – “Chrysalis Literary and Arts Magazine” hosted its spring publication reveal on April 30, in the Blue Ridge Mountain Room at Ferrum College. Editor-in-chief Mattie Green announced the prizes for writing, art, and photography before calling on contributors to present their work published in the spring 2026 issue.

“Chrysalis” is both a club and a practicum course for students who submit their own work and earn course credit for compiling, editing, and laying out the magazine each semester. They sponsor open mike nights several times a year for the college community, as well as the end-of-semester reveal. They encourage students, faculty, and staff to submit original work each semester and to read from their work and discuss visual artwork at the reveal when the magazine is published.

The student prizes for outstanding work in poetry, prose, art, and photography are listed below. All submissions are judged anonymously by professionals who are not current faculty or staff, so the same student can win more than one prize, if they are in different categories.

The cover art, titled “The Young Man,” is a photograph by Green of a page of poetry with editorial marks on it. Her picture of a rusted train in downtown Roanoke won second place for photography. Green graduated with a B.A. in Art: Graphic Design and a B.S. in Business Administration: Marketing at the commencement ceremony two days after the reveal.

At the Academic Awards Ceremony on April 17, Green received an Editor Commendation and the “Chrysalis” Staff Member of the Year award, as well as the Outstanding Student in Art & Design Award and other honors. The previous editor, Scout Lynch ’25, who graduated in December, also received an Editor Commendation. Green’s senior art show, titled Pixels and Pages, was a multimedia storytelling exhibition in the E. Taylor Greer Art Gallery on campus. Some of the photographs and selections of writing included in the exhibit had been published in “Chrysalis.”

Commenting on the new issue, Green praised the “wonderful submissions this semester and a really dedicated staff. They truly came together and as a team we created an amazing magazine. I’m really proud of all their hard work and their willingness to pitch in to get everything completed on time. It was an honor working with them as editor-in-chief.”

The magazine’s advisor, Professor of English Katherine Grimes, commended Green for teaching her classmates so much about magazine layout and InDesign this semester. Grimes also praised the staff’s hard work and collaboration, adding, “There’s a great deal of talent on this campus, and ‘Chrysalis’ showcases it. We’re fortunate that the administration continues to support the students in this important way.”

Green told “The Iron Blade” in January, “This magazine exists to celebrate student creativity in all its forms…. We want students to know their work matters and deserves to be seen.” This issue contains photographs of artworks in several media, including fabric art by Sarah Gallagher ‘26, another prolific contributor who won second prize in art for “Shining Star.” The art judge, Miranda Banks ‘13, who studied art at Ferrum College, works as an elementary teacher and artist. Beth Crow ‘79, who studied photography at Ferrum College and Hollins University, was the photography judge.

The prose was judged by John Hardt, a former English professor at Ferrum who retired in 2022 after serving in a variety of administrative roles at Ferrum and other institutions. Aaron Fagan, who judged the poetry, is the author of five poetry collections. Having also published poems and served on editorial staffs with other publications, he was a featured speaker in the program The Work of Hearts and Hands when he visited Ferrum in February and shared a podium with Assistant Professor of English Patrick Dacey.

At the reveal, every page of the magazine was displayed, including the traditional butterfly image on the title page and a centerfold of animal photographs. The audience enjoyed refreshments and copies of the newly printed issue of “Chrysalis.” Free print copies are distributed on campus, and a digital copy is available, along with past issues, at this link.

Prizes for spring 2026 issue of “Chrysalis”

FERRUM, VA (May 12, 2026) – The campus community celebrated the achievements of Ferrum College students, faculty and staff during its annual Academic Awards Ceremony on Friday, April 17, 2026 in Vaughn Chapel.

Following an invocation by Chaplain Dave Taylor and welcome by Ferrum College President Mirta Martin, she was joined by Athletic Director Cleive Adams for the presentation of the President’s Cup to two seniors who exhibited excellence in athletics, campus and community leadership, character, and academics.

Adams described Gabriel Alvarez as “the ideal student-athlete throughout his four years at Ferrum College. He has embraced every opportunity afforded to him, whether on the court, in the classroom, through student life, or in student employment. Gabriel truly embodies the Ferrum motto, ‘Not Self, But Others,’ and it is evident in his daily interactions with faculty, staff, and his peers. As a team captain for the Men’s Tennis program, Gabriel has served with integrity, pride, and loyalty, as well as assisting the Women’s Tennis program, “demonstrating a genuine dedication to the success of others.”

Alvarez has also been a prolific contributor to Chrysalis Literary and Arts Magazine, winning first prize for photography in the Fall 2025 issue. He has served the college and community as a resident assistant, a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the National Society of Leadership and Success, a peer tutor, a choir member, and a pianist at a number of informal and occasionally formal events. At this ceremony he also received awards for Outstanding Student in Psychology and Outstanding Student Researcher in Psychology. At commencement he was recognized with an academic excellence award for earning a 4.0 grade point average.

The second recipient of the President’s Cup is Erin Harden, who completed three B.S. degrees this semester, in Biology, Biological Chemistry, and Pre-Professional Health, with a pre-med emphasis. A Boone Honors scholar and member of Beta Beta Beta Biology Honor Society and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, Harden received the Outstanding Student in Biology Award in 2025 and the 2026 Pre-Professional Health Sciences Pre-Med Award. She also served as a lab assistant with Dr. Katie Goff for several years.

A Women’s Basketball team captain and 2025 ODAC All-Sportsmanship Team honoree, Harden was a dedicated leader on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for four years, including serving as secretary in 2025–2026. She was also been actively involved in community service through Ferrum College’s athletic programs. Adams described Harden as a leader who consistently sets the standard through her actions, “a great teammate who genuinely celebrates the successes of others over her own personal success.” He emphasized the pride and excellence with which she represented her team, the College, and her community—truly reflecting Ferrum’s motto, “Not Self, but Others.”

Provost Richard Grant said, “This is a wonderful day for Ferrum because we get to celebrate our very best students. These students have achieved so much in their time here!” He then introduced Dean of Faculty Eric Vanden Eykel, who presented the undergraduate academic awards listed below, assisted by academic program coordinators. Members of the ODAC All-Academic Team for 2024-25 were also listed in the program. Newly inducted members of honor societies were recognized, as well as student leaders of campus media organizations: The Iron Blade, Ferrum Radio, and Chrysalis Literary and Arts Magazine.

During the ceremony, the Panther Singers sang the hymn “For the Beauty of the Earth” by Follett S. Pierpoint and the spiritual “This Little Light of Mine,” directed by Program Coordinator for Music and Theatre Emily Blankenship-Tucker.

Among the special awards presented in the second half of the program was the Arthur S. Owens Leadership Award, chosen by the faculty to honor a senior who holds an excellent academic record, has participated in extracurricular activities, and has demonstrated creative initiative in making Ferrum College a better place to study, work, and live. Ashli Wuss received this honor and the Jennie West Outstanding Social Work Student Award. Before completing a B.S.W. in Social Work this spring and earning a Boone Honors Program medallion, she presented her research on domestic violence and middle school children at the Rally in the Valley social work conference. Her mentors noted that, “as President of the Social Work Club, she has shown strong leadership, initiative, and commitment to strengthening student engagement,… promoting collaboration among students who share a passion for social work and community service. Her leadership has helped foster a sense of connection and professional growth among students.”

The Lillie Warwick Slaven Award, presented to outstanding student leaders at Ferrum College since 1969, went to junior Olivia Newbill, who is preparing for a career in education. In 2025 she was awarded a Virginia Teaching Scholarship. Mentors have recognized “her selfless dedication to teaching and serving others,” noting that they have “seen her take a leadership role in every volunteer education opportunity available, showing a genuine calling to mentor the next generation. Her infectious joy, energy, and commitment to the betterment of our community reflect the exact kind of outstanding student leadership and noble character this award was established to honor.”

Awards from The Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation are presented to students and community members at colleges nationwide, selected by the faculty based on their merit and in recognition of their fine spiritual qualities, which they apply in their daily living. Hailey Turner, a senior administrative assistant who supports all the faculty through the Dean of Faculty’s office, is one of two Ferrum College recipients this year. She also received a Pre-professional Health Sciences academic award in the General Health emphasis area and completed a B.S. in Health Sciences this semester. The Sullivan award nomination recognized that her “proactive attitude and capability make her an invaluable asset to our campus community…. Whether she is assisting a student or a colleague, Hailey’s approach is defined by her willingness to go the extra mile;… she won’t stop until she helps you find the right person or solution. Hailey is always working and sacrificing to do the work behind the scenes that needs to happen for students, faculty and staff to accomplish their goals.”

Senior Mattie Green received the other Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award and the James T. Catlin Citizenship Award. As the editor-in-chief of Chrysalis Literary and Arts Magazine this semester, she received an editor commendation and Chrysalis Staff Member of the Year award at this ceremony, as well as the Outstanding Student in Art & Design Award. She was commended for her “steady and extraordinary” leadership as president of the Arts and Media Club and for community service with the Empty Bowls program.

Green has won numerous awards for her contributions of writing and art to Chrysalis as well as organizing open mike nights and the magazine’s end-of-semester reveal. She was also commended for teaching her classmates a great deal about magazine layout and InDesign. Before completing both a B.A. in graphic design and a B.S. in marketing this spring, Green presented a solo multimedia art exhibit called “Pixels and Pages.” In marketing courses she has been commended for taking her real-world expertise as an Appalachian artist and multi-disciplinary creative into the classroom, enriching discussions with academic excellence and insight, generously sharing her knowledge and entrepreneurial experience with others.

The Exemplary Faculty Award was presented to Dr. Ed Hally, associate professor and program coordinator of Political Science, and chair of the School of Education and Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Nancy Brubaker, last year’s recipient, introduced Hally with a humorous and heartfelt tribute to his eighteen years of service to the College, the community, and his profession—including some inside jokes his students would get. She described him as “a beloved and favored teacher who provides his students with the content, confidence and humor to make it through the curriculum and into employment or a graduate program with the tools needed for success.” She quoted several students and alumni, including one who wrote that he “is the type of professor students want to stay in contact with after they graduate. His openness and support make one feel comfortable enough to joke around with him, often inevitably at his expense. I was so fortunate to have had his guidance as a student at Ferrum, and am still fortunate to have his friendship now, a decade after my freshman year.”

Hally has directed a number of important campus programs and committees, including the Quality Enhancement Plan and assessment programs required for accreditation. He served as assistant director of the Boone Honors Program for several years. He has produced a number of conference papers, articles, and book chapters in his field, including six chapters in a book published by Routledge this spring, Short Games and Active Learning in Political Science: Beating the Clock. He is currently writing a book on political satire intended for classroom use as well as general readers interested in politics, current affairs, or the mass media.

Ferrum College Board of Trustees Chair Scott Showalter ’73 presented the Sam Lionberger, Jr. Trustee Awards—established by the Board to honor exceptional contributions by faculty and staff. Nominated by Staff Council and Faculty Council, this year’s honorees were Rachel Walton ’15 (staff) and Professor of English Lana A. Whited (faculty).

Walton, who serves as director of Stanley Library, completed an M.A. in Information and Library Science from the University of South Carolina in 2025, as well as leading a number of new initiatives in the College’s library operations, tutoring services, and first-year experience program. She has been commended for her work building partnerships with all departments of the College and the Franklin County community. The Roanoker magazine included Walton in its “40 Under 40” Class of 2026, an annual recognition of forty Roanoke Valley professionals nominated by readers and chosen by the magazine’s editorial team for their outstanding leadership, early career achievements, and community involvement.

Whited has held the Forrest S. Williams Distinguished Teaching Chair since 2024, a position designated for a member of the humanities faculty to further scholarly and teaching endeavors. In this role she leads professional development opportunities for all faculty each semester. An expert on the works of J. K. Rowling, she has written numerous journal articles and chapters in peer-reviewed books, as well as editing four collections of essays about fantasy literature and writing a scholarly book about the American true crime novel. She has given presentations on literature and writing for many college and community events, podcasts, and conferences, as well as leading a number of academic and community book groups. Whited directed the Boone Honors Program from 2007 to 2024, and served as interim director in Fall 2025.

Academic Excellence Awards were also announced at the Commencement Ceremony on May 2 and those graduating students with perfect grade point averages of 4.0 are listed below.

President Martin commended all those who “faced challenges with determination, courage, and grace.” She said, “Some of you broke records, reached new heights, and celebrated milestones. Others navigated personal obstacles with quiet resilience. And all of you did it while keeping your focus on learning, growth, and excellence. Thank you for your perseverance, your heart, your commitment, and your belief in each other.”

FERRUM, VA, May 12, 2026 — Director of Athletics Cleive Adams has announced the hiring of James Johnson ’93 as Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Ferrum College. Johnson returns to Ferrum after spending the past three years on the Virginia Tech athletic staff as Director of High School Relations for Football.

A 1993 Ferrum College graduate, Johnson played four years for the Panthers under Coach Bill Pullen. He helped lead the program to Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament championships and to Ferrum’s only NCAA Tournament appearance in 1992. He also contributed to Dixie Conference regular-season titles in 1993 and 1995. After graduating in May 1993, Johnson remained at Ferrum for two seasons as an assistant coach under Pullen.

Johnson brings decades of collegiate coaching experience back to Ferrum. During his career, he spent seven years on the basketball staff at Virginia Tech, including two seasons as head coach from 2012–14. Most recently, he served the university in a leadership role with Hokies football. His coaching résumé also includes stops at Longwood University, Old Dominion University, Elon University, College of Charleston, Penn State University, George Mason University, University of Miami, and NC State University. Johnson was also a member of the George Mason coaching staff during the Patriots’ memorable run to the NCAA Final Four in 2006 under Head Coach Jim Larrañaga.

“For all of us at Ferrum College, this is more than a coaching announcement; it is a homecoming,” said Ferrum College President Mirta Martin, who highlighted Johnson’s three decades of experience at the highest level of collegiate basketball, including developing NBA talent, coaching ACC Players of the Year, recruiting elite student-athletes, and building winning programs grounded in discipline, accountability, and excellence.

“Coach Johnson has built a reputation as a mentor, a relationship builder, and, most importantly, a man of strength and character,” continued Martin, noting that Johnson’s former players consistently say he made them better players and better men. “That deeply, deeply matters to Ferrum College. His philosophy reflects the very heart of who we are as an institution; our motto of ‘Not Self, But Others’ calls us to lead through service, humility, and investment in the lives of others. Coach Johnson embodies that spirit. After achieving success on some of the biggest stages of college basketball, he has chosen to return home and give back to the institution that helped shape him.”

Former teammate and current Ferrum College Board of Trustees Second Vice Chair Everett Foxx ’92 spoke about his time competing with Johnson as student-athletes. “I’ve seen firsthand the leadership, competitiveness, discipline, and character that he brings to the team. Even then, he carried himself with the qualities of someone destined to lead. As we continue our transition into Division II competition, this institution is embracing a new era of growth, visibility, and opportunity. With a transition like this, leadership matters,” said Foxx. “Beyond his resume, he understands Ferrum. He understands the culture, the pride, the work ethic, and the responsibility that comes with leading young men, both on and off the court.”

“Ferrum’s Men’s Basketball has a deep, meaningful history, dating back to the early foundation of the program,” said Athletic Director Cleive Adams ’02, who highlighted the coaches who shaped the program over the years. “Today, that proud coaching tree and tradition comes full circle, as we welcome home Coach James Johnson.”

Following the introduction, Johnson took the podium and spoke about being the first in his family to attend college and the opportunities Ferrum College offered him. After graduation, then-Men’s Basketball Coach Bill Pullen gave Johnson his first coaching job. “This is where I learned how to coach,” said Johnson.

After expressing his gratitude to those who supported him as a student-athlete and throughout his coaching career, Johnson addressed the players watching the live stream and those present. “I am honored to be your head coach. This is not just a head-coaching position or a coaching position for me. This is home for me. I look forward to working with you guys on and off the floor. We’re going to represent ourselves in a first-class manner. Get ready to be the hardest-playing team and the toughest team in the country.”

Johnson replaces Patrick Corrigan, who recently left Ferrum after four seasons to become Associate Head Men’s Basketball Coach at the University of West Florida.

Dear Panther Family,

As we close the semester and reflect on this past weekend’s commencement, I wish to extend my deepest gratitude to each of you for what has truly been a remarkable year on our campus.
This has been a phenomenal year—one defined by hard work, resilience, care for one another, and a shared commitment to our students. Every day, in ways both seen and unseen, you have contributed to the strength and spirit of this community. For that, I am profoundly grateful.

Commencement on Saturday was a beautiful and meaningful celebration. Our graduates crossed the stage surrounded by pride, love, and the unmistakable sense of accomplishment that each of you helped make possible. I hope you had the opportunity to reflect on the words of our keynote speaker, Dr. Belle Wheelan. Her message was powerful, timely, and a fitting tribute to the journey of our College and the Class of 2026.

To our students: what a year you have had. To those beginning a new adventure beyond Ferrum College—whether heading to graduate school, launching careers, or pursuing new callings—please know how proud we are of you. You carry with you the very best of this place.

And to those students who will be returning, I cannot wait to welcome you back home in the fall. Thank you for the energy, spirit, and commitment you bring to this campus each and every day. You have achieved excellence not only in the classroom, but also on the field, marking an outstanding inaugural year in Division II competition. The pride and honor you have brought to Ferrum College is immeasurable. Way to go!

To our faculty: thank you for your unwavering dedication to teaching, mentoring, and guiding our students. You have poured so much of your heart and your intellect into this year and onto our students. Thank you!

To our staff: thank you for the countless hours and ways you support the daily life and operations of the College. Your work is essential, and it is very much appreciated.

There have been so many achievements this year, large and small, visible and behind the scenes, and each one has contributed to the momentum we are building together.

Thank you. Truly – THANK YOU.

As we look ahead, may we carry forward the pride, the purpose, and the sense of possibility that have defined this year. Together, we are building something meaningful, something lasting, and something that continues to rise. #FerrumRising is no longer just an impactful media hashtag… it has become a symbol of our commitment to excel.

With gratitude and warmest wishes,
M3

FERRUM, VA, May 2, 2026 — On a celebratory spring morning filled with pride, reflection, and anticipation, Ferrum College honored 144 graduates during its 110th Commencement Ceremony at Hart International Plaza on campus. Family, friends, faculty, and staff gathered on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. to recognize the achievements of 17 graduate students and 127 undergraduates as they crossed the stage to begin the next chapter of their lives.

This year’s ceremony held added historical significance, marking the 50th anniversary of Ferrum College’s first commencement conferring four-year degrees. In a moment that bridged past and present, Martha Arnold Phillips ’76, the College’s first recipient of a four-year degree, was honored, reminding those in attendance of the institution’s growth and enduring mission.

The Class of 2026 reflected both academic excellence and global reach. International graduates represented five countries—Venezuela, South Africa, Canada, Ethiopia, and Kenya—and others hailed from 11 states. Among the majors with the most students, the Bachelor of Science in Health & Human Performance: Exercise Science led with 14 graduates, followed by Psychology and Health & Human Performance: Health & Fitness Management, each with 11 graduates—an indication of strong interest in health and human services fields.

Throughout the ceremony, speakers repeatedly returned to the defining qualities of the Class of 2026: resilience, perseverance, and a deep sense of community.

Ferrum College Provost Richard Grant opened the remarks by honoring the journey that brought graduates to this milestone and reflecting on the impact they have had on the College. “And graduates, by choosing Ferrum College, you have given us a tremendous gift,” he said. “We are better because of you…. Your presence has helped shape this institution and enriched our lives in immeasurable ways. We have become part of one another.”

That sense of shared experience and lasting connection carried into the remarks of Ferrum College Board of Trustees Chairman Scott Showalter ’73, who returned to Commencement as both a leader and an alumnus. Drawing on his time at Ferrum more than 50 years ago, he spoke to the College’s transformative power and the possibilities ahead. “I can honestly say, who I am today is a direct result of the years I spent here at Ferrum,” he said, encouraging graduates to move forward with confidence in the foundation they have built.

Offering a voice from within the class, Senior Class President and Student Government Association President EJ McArthur reflected on the shared challenges and triumphs that shaped the Class of 2026. His remarks highlighted not only their perseverance, but also their commitment to one another—evident in the class’s decision to give back by donating to the Student Emergency Fund. “If there’s one thing our class has mastered, it’s this: we know how to survive,” he said.

Building on those reflections, Ferrum College President Mirta Martin praised the determination and courage graduates demonstrated throughout their time at Ferrum. She emphasized the importance of leaning into challenges and embracing the journey ahead as members of a lifelong community. “What you have accomplished matters… when it would have been easier to step away, you leaned in,” she said.

As the ceremony turned toward the future, President Martin introduced keynote speaker Dr. Belle S. Wheelan, a nationally recognized leader in higher education, former president of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, and former Secretary of Education for the Commonwealth of Virginia.

In her address, Dr. Wheelan challenged graduates to consider both the responsibility and the opportunities that lie ahead. “Yes, it is true that we are depending upon you to build our buildings, invent more efficient and effective ways to do things, defend our laws, protect our citizens, and educate our children,” she said. At the same time, she underscored a critical truth, that working effectively with people is even more important. “If you don’t know how to deal with people,” she said, “all of the education in the world will do you no good. For it is WE, THE PEOPLE who make it all happen.

Dr. Wheelan’s humorous expressions and anecdotes delighted the audience. When she said she was going off script, she told the graduates that, since she had been president of Ferrum College’s accrediting agency, it was fitting that she give them a final exam. Then she asked them to sit on the edge of their seats and free their hands. Next she instructed them to stand, raise their arms, and shout “Hallelujah,” quipping that one thing they will surely remember from this ceremony is that she got them on the edge of their seats and let them shout.

After the keynote address, the ceremony moved into its most anticipated moments—the conferral of degrees. Dr. Martin presented Dr. Wheelan with an Honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Ferrum College. Graduate students were recognized next, followed by the presentation of senior academic excellence awards and recognition of the Boone Honors Program Scholars. The ceremony culminated with undergraduate students crossing the stage, each step marking both an individual achievement and a shared milestone.

With degrees conferred, the focus shifted from accomplishment to connection. Brooke Gill ’05, president of the Alumni Board of Directors, welcomed the Class of 2026 to the Ferrum College Alumni Association, reminding them that their relationship with the College is just beginning. “’Alumni’ isn’t something you become someday. It starts the moment you walk across this stage,” she said. She then led the graduates in reciting the alumni oath, formally marking their place in the Ferrum College community for years to come.

The ceremony concluded with a traditional moment as graduates and attendees joined together to sing the Ferrum College alma mater, led by Mike Ferguson ’81, catering manager and recipient of the College’s 2000 Distinguished Alumni Award.

Saturday’s commencement ceremony followed a traditional baccalaureate service in Vaughn Chapel on Friday evening for all the graduates and families, as well as several awards banquets and celebrations, including a pinning ceremony for nursing graduates and the 50th Annual Tin Cup Induction Ceremony, where the environmental science faculty honored their graduates.

As the Class of 2026 leaves Ferrum College, its members carry not only the knowledge and skills gained in the classroom but also the relationships, experiences, and sense of purpose that will continue to shape their lives. Their journey at Ferrum College may have reached this milestone, but their connection to the College—and to one another—endures.

FERRUM, VA, April 30, 2026 – The Boone Honors Program at Ferrum College celebrated graduating honors students at its annual banquet on April 26, 2026. Members of the program, faculty, staff, and family members gathered in the Blue Ridge Mountain Room on campus.

Dr. Dan Caston, director of the Boone Honors Program, welcomed all who attended. Then Ferrum College President Mirta Martin offered congratulations and expressed her mixed feelings at this time of year when seniors prepare to leave the college. “You leave us in a week but you will never leave us,” she told the graduates. She praised them for exemplifying the college motto “Not Self, But Others,” and said, “You are ready to change the world.”

After an invocation by Pastor Dave Taylor and lunch, Dr. Nancy Brubaker, assistant director of the Boone Honors Program, recognized each of the Honors Advisory Council members. These students help oversee the honors program throughout the year.

Each senior honors student selected a mentor to speak on their behalf. The eleven students and their mentors are listed below. While every student is an individual and some were praised for their self-awareness and personal growth, some common themes emerged as each mentor explained why they were proud of their students. Persistence, diligence, and devotion to Ferrum College were often mentioned. The mentors admired the way these students demonstrated their ability to apply their studies in practical work and internships, as well as their leadership and interest in helping others. Curiosity, “drive and positive energy,” thoughtfulness, and integrity were recognized in tributes to the students.

The Boone Honors Program was established in 2001 under the direction of Dr. David Howell, professor of religion, and is named in honor of former Ferrum College President Jerry Boone and his wife, Shirley. Program members complete five honors-designated seminars, twelve hours of enrichment projects, and Global Perspectives coursework. Many receive travel scholarships. At their commencement ceremony, students completing all requirements are presented the Boone Honors Medallion.

Professor of English Lana Whited, who served as interim director in Fall 2025, offered brief remarks. She asked the students to recognize that their superpower is “to shine light into dark places.” She was surprised when Dr. Brubaker presented the gift of a rocking chair, in appreciation for her dedication to the Boone Honors Program over the past two decades. Dr. Whited directed the program from 2007 to 2024.

Dr. Caston praised Dr. Whited’s leadership and her “devotion to student excellence.” The oak rocking chair, for reading lots of books and rocking her grandchildren, has a plaque on the back with a statement of thanks, the Ferrum College seal, and her favorite quotation from a fictional professor in the Harry Potter series: “It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”

Provost Richard Grant thanked the graduates for “the difference you’ve made in the lives of all of us,” and for representing the very best of Ferrum College. He said, “You make us better through your actions and participation,” praising their commitment to lifelong learning and to living lives of service.

Ms. Corretta Patterson, director of Alumni Relations, recognized the graduates’ achievements by saying, “You are the blueprint for those that follow in your footsteps.” She encouraged the graduates to stay connected and explained many ways they can continue participating when they become lifelong members of the Ferrum College Alumni Association at their commencement ceremony on May 2.
