SUMMARY:Ferrum Community Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The Ferrum Book Club meets every month except December on the third Monday of the month at 6 p.m. All are welcome to join for any or all discussions. \nLocation: Britt Hall 204\, Ferrum Mountain Road\, Ferrum\, VA 24088\n(Turn left into 3rd driveway from Rt. 40 on Ferrum Mountain Road to park behind Britt Hall.)\nIf anyone has mobility issues\, the group can meet downstairs\, not far from a ground-floor door and handicapped parking spots. Just let someone know. \nBook for discussion on August 17: A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness. \nFrom Candlewick Press: \n“Patrick Ness’s #1 New York Times bestseller and Carnegie Medal-winning masterwork is poised to attract a discerning crossover audience. \nThe monster in Conor’s backyard is not the one he’s been expecting — the one from the nightmare he’s had every night since his mother started her treatments. This monster is ancient. And wild. And it wants something from Conor. Something terrible and dangerous. It wants the truth. From the final idea of award-winning author Siobhan Dowd — whose premature death from cancer prevented her from writing it herself — Patrick Ness has spun a haunting and darkly funny novel of mischief\, loss\, and monsters both real and imagined.” \nAlso known as the Time Traveler’s Book Club\, this group usually discusses one novel per month – different kinds of novels chosen by the group in fall for the following year\, and occasionally a nonfiction book. \nThis is a small community group open to anyone\, not a Ferrum College organization. No sign-up or prior notice is required. If you haven’t finished a book (and don’t mind spoilers) or haven’t read the book but you’d like to hear a book discussion anyway and see what it’s like\, just show up. Participants acquire the books on their own from a library or bookseller. \nFor more information and to get on the group’s email list\, contact Lana Whited at Ferrum College\, lwhited@ferrum.edu\, or Susan Selvage\, sselvage22@yahoo.com. \n  \n \nUpcoming Books\nSept. 21    Night Watch by Jayne Anne Phillips \nOct.  19     Are You Now or Have You Ever Been? by Amanda Cockrell \nNov.  16    Nobody’s Girl by Virginia Roberts Guiffre \nDecember – no meeting \n  \n

SUMMARY:Ferrum Community Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The Ferrum Book Club meets every month except December on the third Monday of the month at 6 p.m. All are welcome to join for any or all discussions. \nBooks for 2027 will be proposed at the September meeting. \nBook for discussion on Sept. 21: Night Watch by Jayne Anne Phillips \nInformation from publicity on this book: \nPULITZER PRIZE WINNER • LONGLISTED FOR THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARD IN FICTION • A NEW YORKER BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR • From one of our most accomplished novelists\, a mesmerizing story about a mother and daughter seeking refuge in the chaotic aftermath of the Civil War—and a brilliant portrait of family endurance against all odds \n“A tour de force.” —Tayari Jones\, author of An American Marriage \nIn 1874\, in the wake of the War\, erasure\, trauma\, and namelessness haunt civilians and veterans\, renegades and wanderers\, freedmen and runaways. Twelve-year-old ConaLee\, the adult in her family for as long as she can remember\, finds herself on a buckboard journey with her mother\, Eliza\, who hasn’t spoken in more than a year. They arrive at the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in West Virginia\, delivered to the hospital’s entrance by a war veteran who has forced himself into their world. There\, far from family\, a beloved neighbor\, and the mountain home they knew\, they try to reclaim their lives. \nThe omnipresent vagaries of war and race rise to the surface as we learn their story: their flight to the highest mountain ridges of western Virginia; the disappearance of ConaLee’s father\, who left for the War and never returned. Meanwhile\, in the asylum\, they begin to find a new path. ConaLee pretends to be her mother’s maid; Eliza responds slowly to treatment. They get swept up in the life of the facility—the mysterious man they call the Night Watch; the orphan child called Weed; the fearsome woman who runs the kitchen; the remarkable doctor at the head of the institution. \nEpic\, enthralling\, and meticulously crafted\, Night Watch is a stunning chronicle of surviving war and its aftermath. \nAlso known as the Time Traveler’s Book Club\, this group usually discusses one novel per month – different kinds of novels chosen by the group in fall for the following year\, and occasionally a nonfiction book. \nUpcoming Books\nDiscussion of possible books for 2027 is ongoing and will be finalized during these last meetings of 2026. \nOct.  19     Are You Now or Have You Ever Been? by Amanda Cockrell \nNov.  16    Nobody’s Girl by Virginia Roberts Guiffre \nDecember – no meeting

SUMMARY:Monday Music Jam - moving indoors tonight
DESCRIPTION:The Monday Music Jam at Ferrum College is a free weekly event on The Crooked Road: Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail. Every Monday of the year at 7:00\, anyone can join in for an evening of authentic old-time and bluegrass music. You can play instruments\, sing\, dance\, or just listen and enjoy. \nArrive any time between 7 p.m. and 8:30. Chairs are available for everyone and if you have mobility issues\, or you’re carrying a big instrument\, you can pull up close to the door. \nSee the Facebook page Appalachian Music at Ferrum College for updates and more photos and videos. \nLOCATION \nAlthough recent jam photos show the outdoor BRIM venue\, it’s getting chilly outside. On October 5\, 2026\, the jam will move indoors to the Rex Stephenson Theatre in the lower level of Schoolfield Hall on the main campus. This new location is needed because so many people have been attending since this spring. Hurray! If you follow these directions\, it’s not far from Rt. 40 and from the parking lot to get in the theatre. \n\n• From Rt. 40\, turn on Ferrum Mountain Rd. at the Ferrum College sign (the sign a little closer to Jose’s\, not the gateway closer to the BRIM and farm museum and lake on campus).\n\n• At the 4th driveway from Rt. 40 where signs at the street say Panther Grounds and Grousbeck Music Center\, turn left into the parking lot and park behind Grousbeck.\n\n• If you need handicapped parking or you need to pause closer in to take something large out of your vehicle\, or if you are walking from the parking lot\, keep going on that driveway to the circle a short way up\, behind the Panther Grounds store (where Starbucks is open in daytime hours). Some handicapped spots are on the right there beside the back of the smaller building that is the store.\n\n• When you go up the short driveway from the parking lot\, keep going on the sidewalk\, past two small gardens if you go to the left of Panther Grounds between it and Roberts Hall\, and you will be facing the side of Schoolfield Hall\, the large older brick building.\n\n• Enter the elevator lobby on the ground level under the large front steps. A handicap symbol is next to the white double doors (one of those doors sticks a bit\, but they may be propped open). Outside this door is a large black bell mounted on the ground.\n\n• Once inside the small elevator lobby\, take the elevator or one flight of stairs down to the Rex Stephenson Theatre. Chairs will be available.\n\n• If you were to walk up the big front steps (that’s more walking) and if the center door is unlocked there\, you can take the elevator from the lobby there down to the first floor.\n\nNote that Schoolfield Hall is officially on Wiley Drive\, but the backstage lakeside door is up a steep hill (with a stairway) and there is no parking on Wiley Drive (past Adams Lake) unless you park at the library or behind Franklin Hall. The default address of the college is 215 Ferrum Mt. Rd. but that’s not actually the address of any building except John Wesley Hall. \nNeed to find more handicapped parking? Take the third driveway from Rt. 40 and there are handicapped spots that should be free in evenings\, between Britt Hall and Richeson Hall. It’s a little farther from the theatre but on flat sidewalks (not hilly) from the parking spots. \nDID YOU KNOW YOU CAN EAT HERE? \nAnyone can eat at college venues when they are open (hours vary when college is not in session). They are in Franklin Hall right next to the theatre so you can purchase all-you-can eat meals in the dining hall upstairs\, or get something in one of the venues downstairs in Franklin\, and then pop over to the music jam. \nDID YOU KNOW YOU CAN USE THE COLLEGE LIBRARY? \nStanley Library is right next door to the theatre\, across the patio from the front of Schoolfield Hall. If you need a place to hang out before or after the music jam\, or want to use a library\, it and Franklin Hall are open long hours when school is in session. \nThe Visit Ferrum College page and Plan Your Visit page have other information about things to view and do on campus. \n\n  \nSchoolfield Hall\, with elevator lobby door in lower center \n\n

SUMMARY:Ferrum Community Book Club: Visit with Amanda Cockrell and her Latest Novel
DESCRIPTION:The Ferrum Book Club meets every month except December on the third Monday of the month (usually at 6 p.m.). All are welcome to join for any or all discussions. \nBook for discussion October 19: Are You Now or Have You Ever Been? A Novel of the Hollywood Blacklist\, with author Amanda Cockrell joining us. \nLocation: We will meet in the Magnolia Room this time (enclosed room in the dining hall upstairs in Franklin Hall) and gather about 5:30 to have dinner. \nAmanda’s overview of the novel: \nElizabeth Sydney’s film career spanned the Golden Age of Hollywood and barely survived Sen. Joe McCarthy’s infamous Red Scare hunt for Communists that produced a blacklist that shattered careers. Some of her costars and writer friends weren’t so lucky. Now she wants to be buried in her back yard and the will is invalid if she doesn’t get her way. A combustible assortment of industry friends\, family\, former lovers\, a man no one has hitherto heard of\, half a dozen charitable beneficiaries\, and an ungovernable horde of media descend on the small California town where she retired and picked out a spot in her oak grove. As they try to break the will\, her reasons begin to surface in the story of an old betrayal of friends by friends and by the country’s own government. \nAmanda’s website with overview and review excerpts. \nHollins U Substack page with comments by Amanda about the novel. \nAlso known as the Time Traveler’s Book Club\, this group usually discusses one novel per month – different kinds of novels chosen by the group in fall for the following year\, and occasionally a nonfiction book. \n\nAmanda Cockrell \nUpcoming Books\nDiscussion of books for 2027 will be finalized during this last meeting of 2026. \nNov.  16    Nobody’s Girl by Virginia Roberts Guiffre \nDecember – no meeting
