SUMMARY:Veterans Day Program
DESCRIPTION:Ferrum College will honor the men and women who have served and continue to serve in the United States Armed Forces during its annual Veterans Day program on Wednesday\, November 11\, at 11:30 a.m. in Vaughn Chapel. The event is free and open to the public. \nThe ceremony will feature remarks by Lt. Col. David Taylor\, United States Air Force (Ret.). He brings to Ferrum more than four decades of experience in military service\, national defense\, executive leadership\, education\, and Christian ministry. Taylor was appointed Chaplain of Ferrum College in 2026 and serves as pastor of Maple Grove Church in Ferrum. \nMembers of Ferrum College’s Orchestra Appalachia will perform musical selections during the ceremony. The program will also recognize veterans and active-duty service members from across the College community in appreciation of their service and sacrifice. \n  \nA native of Chester\, Virginia\, Pastor Taylor graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1981 with bachelor’s degrees in physics and mathematics and a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. He later earned a master’s degree in operations research from North Carolina State University. His military career included assignments supporting strategic missile-warning systems\, military space operations\, and senior-level defense planning. He completed 22 years of service in the Air Force\, spanning active-duty and Air Force Reserve assignments. \nTaylor’s military decorations include three Defense Meritorious Service Medals\, two Air Force Commendation Medals\, and six Air Force Organizational Excellence Awards. Beyond his military service\, Taylor has held executive roles in the defense industry; founded Next Summit Advisors\, a veteran-owned leadership coaching and consulting firm; and taught mathematics\, science\, and leadership at colleges and universities for more than 40 years. He is also an International Coaching Federation Professional Certified Coach. \n  \nSince Veterans Day is on Wednesday this year\, this event is also listed as the Inquiring Minds program for this week. Inquiring Minds offers free presentations and activities on various interesting topics for the entire community. Stanley Library at Ferrum College presents the series on most Wednesdays during the academic year\, in the campus’s community hour from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Ferrum Community Book Club - "Nobody’s Girl" by Virginia Roberts Guiffre
DESCRIPTION:The Ferrum Book Club meets every month except December on the third Monday of the month at 6 p.m. All are welcome to join for any or all discussions. \nNov.  16    Nobody’s Girl by Virginia Roberts Guiffre \nLocation: Britt Hall 204\, Ferrum Mountain Road\, Ferrum\, VA 24088\n(Turn left into 3rd driveway from Rt. 40 on Ferrum Mountain Road to park behind Britt Hall.)\nIf anyone has mobility issues\, the group can meet downstairs\, not far from a ground-floor door and handicapped parking spots. Just let someone know. \nInformation from the publisher\, Penguin Random House: \n#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The unforgettable memoir by the late Virginia Roberts Giuffre\, the woman who dared to take on Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell \n“Make no mistake: this is a book about power\, corruption\, industrial-scale sex abuse and the way in which institutions sided with the perpetrator over his victims. . . . But it is also a book about how a young woman becomes a hero. . . . Important [and] courageous.” —The Guardian \nThe world knows Virginia Roberts Giuffre as Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell’s most outspoken victim: the woman whose decision to speak out helped send both serial abusers to prison\, whose photograph with Prince Andrew catalyzed his fall from grace. But her story has never been told in full\, in her own words—until now. \nIn April 2025\, Giuffre took her own life. She left behind a memoir written in the years preceding her death and stated unequivocally that she wanted it published. Nobody’s Girl is the riveting and powerful story of an ordinary girl who would grow up to confront extraordinary adversity. \nHere\, Giuffre offers an unsparing and definitive account of her time with Epstein and Maxwell\, who trafficked her and others to numerous prominent men. She also details the molestation she suffered as a child\, as well as her daring escape from Epstein and Maxwell’s grasp at nineteen. Giuffre remade her life from scratch and summoned the courage to not only hold her abusers to account but also advocate for other victims. The pages of Nobody’s Girl preserve her voice—and her legacy—forever. \nNobody’s Girl is an astonishing affirmation of Giuffre’s unshakable will—first\, to claw her way out of victimhood\, and then to shine light on wrongdoing and fight for a safer\, fairer world. Equal parts intimate and fierce\, it is a remarkable narrative of fortitude in the face of depravity and despair. \nBook list for 2027 will be reviewed at the November meeting. \nNo meeting in December.

SUMMARY:Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas 2026
DESCRIPTION:Coming back to Ferrum College for our fourth year\, this family favorite is sure to please with new surprises! \nFind tickets and details on performance dates and times at this link. \nLocation: Sale Theatre in the upper floor of Schoolfield Hall\, Ferrum College \nDirected by Emily Blankenship-Tucker \nIt’s three days before Christmas\, and Mayor Fox has just announced a Christmas talent contest with a grand prize of fifty dollars! Meanwhile\, times are tough for Ma and Emmet Otter since Pa passed away\, and winning that prize money would allow them to buy each other a secret Christmas gift. Emmet considers forming a jug-band with his friends\, but in order to do that he’ll have to put a hole in Ma’s washtub. The problem is\, Ma earns money by doing other folks’ laundry in the washtub. Ma thinks about hocking Pa’s old toolbox so she can make a costume for the contest\, but Emmet uses those tools to do odd jobs. As Christmas Eve and the talent contest quickly approach\, will Ma and Emmet sacrifice what little they have\, or will their Christmas wishes come true? \nAbout Us: \nAn optional dinner or lunch is served before the show in Franklin Hall next door\, and is served by the actors in the tradition of The Blue Ridge Dinner Theatre. Both Franklin Hall and Schoolfield Hall\, where our performances are held\, are handicapped accessible. We offer alternative meals for those with food allergies when given advance notice: please note dietary and mobility restrictions in the comments at checkout. \nMeal ticket sales often end before the show dates\, and may not be available at the door. Purchase tickets at www.ferrum.edu/theatre-tickets. \nEmail us at theatre@ferrum.edu or call the box office at (540) 365-4355. Please leave a message at the box office phone number\, and we will make every effort to respond as quickly as possible. \nRead more about the 2023 production and the creation of many puppet characters here: https://cardinalnews.org/2023/12/07/ferrum-brings-a-much-loved-puppet-christmas-to-the-stage \nCast list for 2026 before the first rehearsal:
