SUMMARY:Ferrum College Blue Ridge Folklife Festival and Arts & Crafts Show
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the longest-running folklife festival in western Virginia! Since 1973\, the Blue Ridge Folklife Festival has presented authentic regional folk music\, craftspeople\, draft horse and dog handlers\, car builders\, tractor restorers\, country cooks\, moonshine tale tellers\, and much more! \nAlways the fourth Saturday in October\, this legendary festival is coordinated by the Blue Ridge Institute & Museum (BRIM)\, the official State Center for Blue Ridge Folklore and a major venue on The Crooked Road Music Trail. \nCelebrating the rich heritage and traditions of the Blue Ridge region\, this year’s festival will offer a full day of live entertainment\, traditional demonstrations\, handcrafted arts\, and family-friendly activities\, while introducing new artisans\, interactive experiences\, and expanded attractions. In a new arts and crafts show\, more than 100 artisans will offer handmade jewelry\, folk art\, woodworking\, pottery\, textiles\, and other unique creations. \nGuests can also enjoy moonshine tastings with Five Mile Mountain Distillery and relax in the beer and wine garden. Traditional foods such as country ham biscuits and fried apple pies are always popular at the festival. \nFor Ferrum College alumni\, this year’s festival will include an alumni breakfast and a lounge area inside Franklin Hall off the patio\, instead of a tent outside. The Office of Alumni and Family Relations will provide details in upcoming publicity and the college website Alumni pages. Click here for alumni breakfast registration. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Ferrum Community Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The Ferrum Book Club meets every month except December on the third Monday of the month at 6 p.m. All are welcome to join for any or all discussions. \nLocation: Britt Hall 204\, Ferrum Mountain Road\, Ferrum\, VA 24088\n(Turn left into 3rd driveway from Rt. 40 on Ferrum Mountain Road to park behind Britt Hall.)\nIf anyone has mobility issues\, the group can meet downstairs\, not far from a ground-floor door and handicapped parking spots. Just let someone know. \nBook for discussion on August 17: A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness. \nFrom Candlewick Press: \n“Patrick Ness’s #1 New York Times bestseller and Carnegie Medal-winning masterwork is poised to attract a discerning crossover audience. \nThe monster in Conor’s backyard is not the one he’s been expecting — the one from the nightmare he’s had every night since his mother started her treatments. This monster is ancient. And wild. And it wants something from Conor. Something terrible and dangerous. It wants the truth. From the final idea of award-winning author Siobhan Dowd — whose premature death from cancer prevented her from writing it herself — Patrick Ness has spun a haunting and darkly funny novel of mischief\, loss\, and monsters both real and imagined.” \nAlso known as the Time Traveler’s Book Club\, this group usually discusses one novel per month – different kinds of novels chosen by the group in fall for the following year\, and occasionally a nonfiction book. \nThis is a small community group open to anyone\, not a Ferrum College organization. No sign-up or prior notice is required. If you haven’t finished a book (and don’t mind spoilers) or haven’t read the book but you’d like to hear a book discussion anyway and see what it’s like\, just show up. Participants acquire the books on their own from a library or bookseller. \nFor more information and to get on the group’s email list\, contact Lana Whited at Ferrum College\, lwhited@ferrum.edu\, or Susan Selvage\, sselvage22@yahoo.com. \n  \n \nUpcoming Books\nSept. 21    Night Watch by Jayne Anne Phillips \nOct.  19     Are You Now or Have You Ever Been? by Amanda Cockrell \nNov.  16    Nobody’s Girl by Virginia Roberts Guiffre \nDecember – no meeting \n  \n

SUMMARY:Mark Twain and Music
DESCRIPTION:This lifelong learning program about Mark Twain and music will include discussion by Professor of English Lana A. Whited\, with musical selections performed by Fair and Austin Robey\, followed by lunch. \nWhile Mark Twain is celebrated for his razor-sharp wit and literary realism\, less well known is his lifelong interest in music\, spanning both American popular music and the European grand operatic tradition. Influences upon him and his writing included spirituals and the Delta blues\, the Presbyterian church\, contemporary songwriters\, classical composers such as Richard Wagner\, and the habits of piano-playing and singing that filled his household in Hartford\, Connecticut. \nTwain’s letters\, personal journals\, and novels such as Huckleberry Finn and Pudd’nhead Wilson reflect how Twain used music as a tool for social commentary\, character development\, nostalgia\, and humor. Throughout Twain’s public career\, his writing about music illustrates the same key tension existing between Samuel Langhorne Clemens and his famous persona\, Mark Twain–between the serious writer/critic and the amateur\, or “mucker” (as he termed it). For example\, he both enjoyed opera and wrote\, “I have attended operas\, whenever I could not help it\, for fourteen years now; I am sure I know of no agony comparable to the listening to an unfamiliar opera.” The evolution of Twain’s tastes and attitudes concerning music explain how his biographer Albert Bigelow Paine\, who had earlier found the author “wanting in artistic taste\,” could write that by age 70\, Twain had “a passion for music.” \nPresenter Bios: \nProfessor of English Lana Whited\, the longest-serving full-time member of the faculty at Ferrum College\, wrote her master’s thesis on Mark Twain and music at the College of William and Mary. She is the author and editor of essays and books on fantasy literature\, and author of the scholarly book about true crime fiction\, Murder\, In Fact. \n     \nFair Robey enjoyed a long career teaching music in the Franklin County Public Schools and currently serves as music director at Saint Peter’s-in-the-Mountains Episcopal Church. She is a member of her family’s popular local band\, The Robeys. She has served as accompanist for many productions of the Blue Ridge Dinner Theatre at Ferrum College. \n \nAustin Robey is Director of Admissions at Mountaintop Montessori School in Charlottesville and a member of his family’s popular local band\, The Robeys. \nDate: Tuesday\, June 16\, 2026Location: Phoebe Needles Center\, 732 Turners Creek Road\, Callaway\, VA 24067Doors Open: 9:30 AMProgram Begins: 10:00 AMLunch Served: Noon\nFor more info: 540.483.1518 or events@phoebeneedles.org or visit the Adult Programs tab at phoebeneedles.org.
