Dr. Bates currently lives in Chicago, but considers the East Coast home as part of his formative years were in Fredericksburg, Va. Currently, his teaching practice is on inquiry-based teaching and learning, curriculum and instructional design, and teacher leadership and coaching in K-12 schools. Dr. Bates’ experience includes teaching and mentoring pre- and in-service teachers at the elementary and secondary levels on curriculum and instructional development, teaching methods, technology integration, assessment, and student interventions. Previously, he was a secondary history teacher for Chicago Public Schools.
Research
PhD dissertation focus: reconceptualizing of world history curriculum in a globalized society.
Current research interests: inquiry- and project-based learning, student-centered curriculum and instruction, history and social studies education, and teacher self-study.
