Area Coordinators (ACs) are full-time professional, live-in staff members responsible for the overall operation of the residence halls. They have graduate degrees in student development or a related field and/or have had previous experience working with college students and student groups.
A Resident Advisor (RA) is an undergraduate student serving on the residence life staff who is responsible for a community of residents. The RA assists in the social, educational, cultural, and community development of students on the floor and in the residence hall. The RA serves as a community builder, programmer, and administrator, as well as a resource for campus services, and will help promote our mission to provide students with safe and comfortable living environment. The RA spends a significant amount of time getting to know residents as individuals and generating enthusiasm in bringing students together to create floor and hall communities.
Dean of Students
Nicole was born and raised in Bloomfield, NJ. She studied History and developed a love of museum work as an undergraduate at Roanoke College in Salem, VA where she received her BA in 2005. In addition to academics, Nicole was involved in student organizations and worked numerous jobs on campus, including serving as an RA where she found her passion for working with college students. Nicole received her Masters in Counselor Education: Student Affairs, and her favorite colors (orange and purple) from Clemson University in 2008 where she served on the leadership boards of two honor societies and worked with residential life, the education faculty, and on the academic side of the athletic program. She furthered her vocation professionally at Bridgewater College, George Mason University, Roanoke College, and James Madison University, and sailed to 15 countries over 4 months on the Semester at Sea study abroad program in 2013. She was welcomed into the Alpha Sigma Alpha sisterhood and spent three years as the chapter adviser to the Theta Beta chapter, has served on the governing councils of two professional organizations, and is currently a member of the board of the Rocky Mount Habitat for Humanity. She is working toward a doctorate in Education: Leadership Studies from the University of Lynchburg and is a sports enthusiast who also enjoys travelling, TV, and beekeeping.
Chip Phillips ‘77
Director of Housing & Residence Life
Chip is a 1977 graduate of Ferrum College receiving a BS in Leisure Services in the second, four year graduating class at Ferrum College. Having worked in a variety of positions on campus, Chip has been actively involved in the Ferrum community a as member of the Board of Directors for the Ferrum Volunteer Fire Department and the Tri-Area Community Health Center, as well as serving as the President of the Ferrum College Subdivision Homeowner’s Association. Chip and his wife Martha live in Ferrum.

Vanessa was born in Roanoke, VA and has lived in Franklin County most all her life. She graduated from Franklin County High School, where she cheered all 4 years. She lives in Ferrum with her husband Chris and their 2 children, Owen and Olivia. She began working at Ferrum College in 2011. Vanessa received her BA in Healthcare Administration in 2018. She is a member of the Tau Sigma Academic Honor Society. In Fall of 2019 she received her Masters in Human Service Counseling: Executive Leadership from Liberty University. A lot of Vanessa’s time is spent running to and from soccer practices and dance but when there is downtime she enjoys a quiet evening at home with her family.
Alli Summers ’15

Alli was born and raised at Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia. In 2015 she was the very first and the very last to receive a BA in Democracy, Justice, and Civic Engagement from Ferrum College. Alli was involved in many activities on campus such as Delta Phi Epsilon, who she is currently the on campus advisor for. In 2018 Alli received her Masters of Law: Administrative and Regulatory Law from the Regent University School of Law. Alli can frequently be found taking walks around campus with her dogs Woody & Gracie or cheering on the Black Hats on Saturdays in the Fall.
Leya Deickman ’19
Leya was born in El Paso, Texas, but spent much of her life traveling as a military dependent. Leya graduated from Ferrum in 2019. She received a BA in Psychology. During Leya’s time on campus, she was involved in the Boone Honors Program, Lambda Sigma, Alpha Chi, Help Save the Next Girl, and the women’s wrestling team, where she became an Academic- All American. Leya also received the Arthur S. Owen Leadership Award for her outstanding character, initiative, and honor. Leya is currently pursuing an M.Ed. in Higher Education. She enjoys spending her free time with her son, Kendall.
Dyamond Howell was born an Army Brat in Sierra Vista, AZ, but has spent most of her life in North Carolina. She received her B.A. in Cinema and TV Arts from Elon University in May of 2019. While at Elon, she participated in many on campus activities, including Residence Life, and is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She has a twin sister who is a senior at North Carolina A&T. While not at work, Dyamond enjoys creating digital art, reading and sleeping.
