Lana A. Whited is editor of the The Ivory Tower and Harry Potter: Perspectives on a Literary Phenomenon (U of Missouri P, 2002) and co-editor, with M. Katherine Grimes, of Critical Insights: The Harry Potter Series (Grey House, 2015). An internationally recognized expert on the Harry Potter series, Dr. Whited has contributed essays on Harry Potter to publications such as The Lion and Unicorn and Through the Looking-Glass and annually teaches a Hogwarts Academy course in a middle school enrichment program. She also serves as Minister of Magical Education for Diagon Valley, the Roanoke region's annual Harry Potter festival. Dr. Whited is a Salzburg Seminar Fellow and was a featured panelist in 2004 at a special symposium in Trebon, Czech Republic, sponsored by the Committee on Media and Culture of the Czech Parliament. Dr. Whited is professor of English and director of the Boone Honors Program at Ferrum College in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. In 2014, she was recognized with an Exemplary Teaching Award from the Board of Higher Education and Ministries of the United Methodist Church, and she is Ferrum College’s nominee for the 2016 State Council of Higher Education of Virginia’s Outstanding Faculty Awards. Dr. Whited earned degrees from Emory & Henry College, The College of William & Mary, Hollins University, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
