My name is Hunter Aycock, and I am from a little town called Skippers, Va. My major is Environmental Science. I grew up on a small farm near the North Carolina border, fishing, hunting and swimming whenever I got the chance. We were not rich by any means, but we certainly weren’t poor enough to qualify for any financial aid. I went to a private school through elementary school, then transferred to the public school from which I would graduate. For several years I resented this decision, but after I was placed in the talented and gifted (TAG) program, and later accepted into the Governor’s School program, I realized that it had been a good choice after all. I made many good friends in the Governor’s School program and graduated with an Associate’s Degree from Southside Virginia Community College.

Life was not always so kind, however; in August of my senior year of high school, I realized I had kidney stones and upon getting a CT Scan was informed that I also had scoliosis. After this news, I went to a spinal doctor and found out that I would have to have surgery. Luckily I was able to finish my senior year (although I was strongly encouraged not to), before I had my surgery. After a seven-hour surgery and the addition of two titanium rods and twenty-four titanium screws, I was two inches taller and had an entirely different outlook on life.

I chose Ferrum College because of its location, reputation in the Environmental Science field, small size, and, of course, the hefty scholarship I was offered.  I am planning to focus on the forestry aspect of my field but I have not set anything in stone as of yet.
