Women’s Leadership Conference to Feature Nationally Known Speakers

6:30pm-3/21/01
Linda Chavez delivers the Closing Address in Vaughn Chapel

From bluegrass political activism to conservative thought on our modern melting pot, the 2001 Women’s Leadership Conference at Ferrum College will explore women’s contributions to our changing society. The two-day conference, beginning on March 20, will include workshops on diversity and business. The conference seeks to encourage men and women to take leadership roles in their personal, professional, and civic roles.
Speakers this year include Dr. Jann Lacoss ’84, faculty consultant and coordinator of the Teaching Resource Center at the University of Virginia; Ms. Linda Chavez, syndicated writer, president of the Center for Equal Opportunity and former Bush nominee for Secretary of Labor; Mrs. Corella Bonner, co-founder of the Bonner Foundation, and the Reverend Doris Byrd, a minister and leader with the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church.
“We’re really excited to have a great group of speakers and panelists again this year. The conference is going to be a great experience for all our students and the public,” said Lydia Odell, Women’s Leadership Conference chairperson and director of Experiential Learning at Ferrum College.
The Reel World String Band, of Lexington, KY, opens the conference with a 10:30 a.m. educational workshop on Tuesday, March 20. The traditional music group uses a blend of bluegrass and old time music to explore Southern culture. An 8:00 p.m. performance that evening will be free and open to the public.
On Wednesday, there will be paneled workshops featuring diversity and business tracks. At 11:00 a.m., a keynote address by Lacoss will be followed by lunch and concurrent sessions throughout the afternoon. Chavez will speak at 6:30 p.m. After a chapel service with The Rev. Doris Byrd, lyric-soprano Kimberly O’Bryan ’95, will give a recital. O’Bryan has appeared with the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
For more information, contact Odell at (540) 365-4267 or visit www.ferrum.edu/career/wlc2001.htm. All conference events are free and open to the public. Complimentary meals are offered on a limited basis to those who register by March 14.
