Short Term Study Abroad Opportunities
The Business Education Initiative, operated by the Training and Employment Agency of Northern Ireland, annually sends one or two students to Ferrum College for a full academic year of study in the area of Business. In return, educational institutions in Northern Ireland offer spaces for a full academic year to undergraduate students from participating American colleges and universities. Each participating American institution may nominate up to two students.
Ferrum College enjoys a unique relationship with the
Pskov Pedagogical Institute in Pskov, Russia. Based on the strong Sister-City
Relationship between nearby Roanoke, Virginia and Pskov, Ferrum has established its own
exchange program, which brings a Russian student each semester to our campus. In
return, Ferrum students enjoy both short and long term internships in Pskov, which is
located about four hours from St. Petersburg in Northwest Russia, and is one of Russia's
oldest and most beautiful cities. Since 1993 Ferrum students have participated in a
variety of programs in Pskov. Some have helped in the early stages of renovation of a 13th
century convent, which is now once again flourishing. Others have taught English in
Pskov schools and have lectured about American life and culture in Pskov institutions of
higher learning. One graduate of Ferrum College completed research for her PhD
dissertation from another American institution under the auspices of this unique exchange
program. In the summer of 2000, a group of five students visited Pskov, where they lived
with host families and combined study of Russian language and culture with unusual
opportunities to visit such city institutions as orphanages, courts, and police stations.
During
the Fall 2000 semester, Ferrum is pleased to be hosting Miss Olga Ovsyannikova, our ninth
exchange student from the Pskov Pedagogical Institute

In addition to
opportunities in Russia, the Division of Languages and Literatures offers a variety of
programs in Canada, France, Spain, and Latin America. For information on these
programs contact: Dr. Martha Brandt Associate Professor of French, mbrandt@ferrum.edu or, Dr. Edward Cornbleet,
Associate Professor of Spanish, ecornbleet@ferrum.edu
The Environmental Science Major at Ferrum
College offers a three week study abroad course in the Virgin Islands titled,
"Tropical and Marine Ecology." This course is taught every other year, and
offers participating students a chance to study tropical and marine plants and animals in
their natural habitats. An integral part of the course is emphasis on individual
student interests and research. Students work closely with Ferrum faculty members
during the intensive three week course, and upon successful completion of an independent
research project receive four semester hours of credit.
Through the Imperial College of the University of
London, Ferrum College is able to offer its students the chance to study for either a
semester or a summer in London, England. Students who take part in this excellent program
may earn 12-15 hours of credit, while they actually live in a London flat and visit many
of England's cultural and historical sites.

A. Ferrum
College and the Annandale United Methodist Church in Annandale, Virginia have jointly
established a unique program of study for students from South Korea. Selected
students will first spend a summer and possibly a full semester living with host families
in Annandale, where they will enroll in off-site English language courses provided by
Ferrum. This will offer them a chance to greatly increase their language proficiency
and will help them become acclimatized to American life and culture, before they move to
Ferrum's main campus
Bum Chan An- or Danny, as he is known at Ferrum, is the first participant in the Ferrum./Annandale Korean Initiative.
Hi! My name is Daniel An. My real name is
BumChan-An. I am a Ferrum College second semester freshman. I want to talk about my
most nervous time. It was when I came to Ferrum College for the first time. I
was nervous because I couldn't speak English and I didn't know much about America.
However, I am fine. I have many good friends.
There are plans to expand this program in order to offer opportunities to Ferrum students and faculty members to study or teach at Korean Institutions.

Ferrum College also enjoys an official agreement with
Sejong University in Seoul. Under the terms of this agreement, Ferrum College and
Sejong University "may develop specific exchange activities to implement the mutual
understanding." The two institutions plan to purse student and faculty
exchanges and collaborative research and cultural programs. I
Short Term Study Abroad Opportunities
Ferrum College offers a number of short term travel abroad experiences led by members of the Ferrum faculty and designed to provide out-of-class learning in a variety of disciplines. In the past, students have traveled with faculty members to South America, Europe, Africa, China, Mongolia, Central Asia, Russia, and Israel.
In the spring of
2000, seven Ferrum College Students accompanied Rev. Wes Astin, College Chaplin, and Dr.
David Howell, Assistant Professor of Religion, on a two week archaeological dig to
Bethsaida, Israel.
Sarah Ansell, a History major and Religion and Russian minor, has this to say about her
trip to Israel:
" I was given the tremendous opportunity this past May to travel to Israel for an
archaeological dig and tour of the country. I was able to experience first hand many
things that I had learned in the classroom and to see with my own eyes the history and
religion of an area that has had an impact on all the world. Travel broadens a person's
horizons and enriches the soul. My outlook of the world changed and therefore I have
learned."
Drs. Astin and Howell will be escorting a group of students on a "Wesleyan Heritage Tour" in May, 2001 and are already planning a trip that will take students in " The Steps of Paul" in 2002. For more information on the trip to England, please call or email: Rev. Wes Astin, 540-365-3705, wastin@ferrum.edu; Dr. David Howell,540-365-3655, dhowell@ferrum.edu
Also in May, 2001, Ferrum Students will have the chance
to visit Kenya, East Africa. In addition to experiencing a traditional wildfire
safari, students who take part in this program will learn about the people and cultures of
Kenya and will assist local people in improving building and grounds at a Kikuyu
school. This trip is open to Ferrum students and other students who attend colleges
that are members of the Appalachian College Association, as well as friends and alumni of
Ferrum College. For further information on itinerary, cost, and academic credit,
