Important Faculty/Advisor Tips
[ C or higher is required in ENG 102 before progressing to ENG Literature
[ One English Lit is required for General Distribution credit
[ Writing Intensive component requires 1) an ADDITIONAL ENG LIT (the first English literature meets general distribution requirements) AND a 300 level WI with a C or higher OR 2) two 300 level WI courses with a C or higher. All WI courses must be taken at Ferrum College and are listed in the catalog and marked on student transcripts.
[ ENG 102, Comp & Research II, is required before COM 201, Public Speaking.
[ The Speaking intensive requirement can be met by passing COM 201, DRA 222, the combo LSC 307/497/498, HUM333 or ENG 433 - with a C or higher.
[ Full-time status requires 12 hours in the regular Spring Term. E-term hours must be in addition to the 12 hours!! Students that go into overload status due to e-term are not charged overload fees.
[ Review at the specific distribution requirements for each Major. Ex. CJU requires MTH 206…. The student should not start with MTH 105.
[ MTH 100 is a course that leads to MTH 103 or 111. MTH 099 leads to MTH 105 unless they are required to reach a higher level math. MTH 103 and MTH 111 cannot both be taken for credit. MTH 203 and MTH 211 cannot both be taken for credit.
[ Students taking REL 111 will not receive credit for REL 112 or REL 113.
[ Must have a total of 30 hours at the 300-400 level – not all majors require 30 hours at the 300-400 level and students have to take additional hours to meet the requirement (especially Psychology, Sciences)
[ Always watch that students meet the total required hours 121/127 dependent upon various Catalog requirements
[ Always follow the Catalog for the year the student entered or forward. You cannot pick a Major from one catalog and follow the GEN ED from a different catalog.
[ Any deviations from the catalog (ex. Major course not offered for several years and a replacement becomes necessary) require a written substitution letter. Substitution letters require written permission from the Program Coordinator and the Associate Dean.
[ A registration of over 19 credits is considered an Overload and 1) form and written permission must be requested with the Dean’s Office 2) there is an additional charge of $450 (subject to change with each Catalog) per credit hour above 19 credits
[ ADD/Drop Period: Students have the first week to add classes. Students have the first four weeks to drop classes without penalty. Special caution needs to be given before allowing a student to drop. Watch closely: 1) must stay full-time (at least 12 hours) and 2) pay careful attention that students are taking enough credits to be successful on the satisfactory academic progress chart.
[ THE CHART! P.50 (07-08) Make certain advisees are familiar with the standards of academic progress. Watch those repeat D courses! If a student is repeating a “D”, do not count those hours twice.
[ 099 courses vs. load hours. 099/092 courses are counted in the hours for calculating a full-time load; however, they will not be included in the EARNED hours at the end of the semester. They will need to play catch-up the following semester or plan on summer school. Use e-term to the student’s advantage.
[ Dean’s list requires 12 hours of college level work (excluding 099/094 courses).
[ “Change of Advisor” forms are available in the ARC. Electronic Advisor access is granted through the ARC, not the Registrar’s Office.
[ E-term requirement. Students following the 2006-07 catalog and beyond will need to participate in two e-terms prior to graduation. Transfer students with 58 hours or more will be required to take only one e-term course. The deadlines for adding/dropping e-term courses are the same as normal spring courses. If a student doesn’t drop an e-term course prior to the fourth week of the spring semester, the student will be obligated for any fees associated with the course.
[ Education Minor requirements: 2.8 Major GPA, 2.5 Cumulative, 3.0 Minor GPA
[ Internships require a 2.0 Major and Cumulative GPA and Junior status. Students must complete the Internship Handbook available from the Dean’s Office and must register for the course (typically taken during the summer). There is an internship fee of $150 per credit hour ($750 minimum) for 2008-09. Restrictions can be higher in certain programs; however the student is required to have a minimum of a 2.0 and 24 hours @ 300-400 level (most cases: JR status). Please note: **A student must not be permitted to complete an internship during the summer and register for the course during a different term to avoid fees.
[ Do not put entering Freshmen in a 300 level course (no matter how much they beg)!
[ Students seeking to transfer coursework back to Ferrum should send official transcripts to the Registrar’s Office if they have already taken classes elsewhere. If they are planning on taking future coursework, such as summer school or online courses, they need to complete a Transfer Pre-Approval Form with the Registrar’s Office. The Registrar’s Office will verify the equivalency of transfer coursework prior to the student taking courses at another institution.
[ I-Assistant provides you with a wealth of information and tools regarding the students academic progress – use it to your advantage. The Core Requirements, GPA Calculator, Maintaining Major/Minors, and the new Degree Audit (for programmed Majors) links are extremely useful with advising.
[ During each pre-registration session, verify the correctness of the Major/Minor for each advisee in the Maintain Major/Minor selection on i-assistant. It is important to numerous departments on campus that these be as accurate as possible.
[ Once students reach Junior status, they are required to complete a Graduation Check or Degree Plan. Students complete this form and it should be carefully scrutinized by the advisor before submission to the Registrar’s Office. The Degree Plan review by the advisor and student is basically a contract regarding how the degree will be achieved. You should give this process a lot of careful thought and attention and make a copy for your file before allowing it to leave your possession.
[ Ferrum accepts College Level Examinations (CLEP) with a score of 50 or higher and Advanced Placement (AP) scores or a 3 or higher. AP Credit is awarded based on the ACE recommendations.
[ The catalog indicates that “Incomplete” grades can be awarded in special cases (such as lengthy illness). Arrangements need to be made between the student and the faculty awarding the “I” grade, as to how the student is to submit the incomplete assignments. The student has seven weeks to remove the incomplete grade; otherwise, it will be converted to an “F” grade.
[ All grade changes require the completion of a blue “Grade Change Form”. Changes from an “incomplete” grade do not require the signature of the Associate Dean.
[ Students must complete their last semester of academic work at Ferrum College, with the exception that they may transfer back up to nine credits. A student cannot participate in graduation exercises if they are lacking more than one class.
