TEXTS:  Stumpf, Samuel Enoch, Socrates to Sartre:  A History of Philosophy , 5th edition

OBJECTIVES:

To introduce students to the dominant themes and trends in the history of western philosophy, and to make them aware of the role which these have played in the development of contemporary culture.

To acquaint students with the specific positions of the major thinkers in the western philosophical tradition from Thales to the rise of modern science.

To familiarize students with the nature of philosophical reflection, argumentation, and what might properly be called "philosophical attitude" in order that they might discover some method to aid in the integrating of the various regions of the experienced world.

FORMAT:  Lecture/Discussion

REQUIREMENTS:

Class attendance, as such, will not be required beyond the minimum requirement of the college.  Student participation, however, is a requirement.  Students are, therefore, strongly advised to attend class in order that they may participate.  Excessive absence will be seen as constituting a failure to meet the participation requirement.

There will be five major exams which are likely to include essay-type questions.  There will be no make-up exams. If a student absolutely cannot be present for an exam, and if this student has contacted the professor in advance, other arrangements will be made.  Under normal conditions, each exam will constitute 20% of the final grade.
