The Passport Staff: Learning Through Hands-on Experiences
The Passport believes that its student staff should expose itself
to a wide variety of learning opportunities. It offers a select
group of students an avenue through which they can introduce new
insights, deal with recurring ideas and also create a market place
from which to share ideas. It is true that the success of The Passport
is attributable to the composition of its staff. By carefully selecting
the students for this publication, the faculty recognizes the importance
of sustainable quality, energy, and a strong commitment to excellence.
This diverse group of students also was selected to continue the
rich tradition established by their predecessors and the strengths
of our academic programs. It is a tradition that is sensitive to
group dynamics, partial to reasoned discourse and respectful of
hard work and excellence.
On behalf of the Division of History, Political Science and the
Arts, we introduce you to these young men and women who wish to
have an audience with you. As faculty, staff, alumni, prospective
or current students, we hope you find the work of these students
as a way in which to maintain, introduce and reaffirm your affection
for Ferrum College. These students also hope you will see The Passport
as an invitation to you to join them.

Wilson Paine – Associate Editor
& History Section Editor
Home Town: Maryville Tennessee
High School: Maryville
Major (s): History with a minor in Political Science and
Philosophy
Wilson’s search for new challenges and knowledge
took him to Washington, D.C. as an intern in the Washington
Center for Internships and Academic Seminars. This opportunity
to bridge theory and practice took Wilson to the Democratic
Convention in Boston and to President George W. Bush’s
second term inauguration ceremony. It is evident that
he is a sophomore who recognizes the importance of exploring
new ideas and challenging stereotypes. More recently,
Wilson spent the fall of 2004 in London, England studying
at Imperial College under the auspices of the Appalachian
College Association study abroad program. As a member
of the tennis team, he maintained a winning record of
20-3 in his first year at Ferrum. Wilson holds both the
longest winning streak and singles season winning percentage
at the College. This season he went 5-5 and was named
to the USA South All-Academic Team for the second year
in a row. Wilson strongly believes that Ferrum College
“offers many opportunities, experiences, and relationships
that can only be found in a small school.”

Rachael Brown – Environmental
Science Section Editor
Home Town: Ashland, OH
High School: Mapleton
Major(s): Environmental Science with a minor in Political
Science and Journalism
Rachael is a bright and thoughtful student who seems
to bring a level of maturity and wisdom to a group setting
that exceeds her youth. She enjoys the outdoors, singing,
knitting and as she puts it “learning new, random,
and sometimes seemingly useless skills and facts.”
It also appears that Rachael is able to balance her Christian
faith and values with a strong desire to serve. According
to her, “the environmental science program, wonderful
setting, small size, and friendly people” are good
reasons to attend Ferrum College.
