The Speech

Mark R. Warner, Virginia’s Democratic gubernatorial candidate, will be the keynote speaker for the Ferrum College Commencement ceremonies on May 13. The 2001 Commencement exercises for the College will begin at 10:30 a.m. on the front lawn. Rain location will be Swartz Gymnasium.

Warner is a founding partner of Columbia Capital Corporation, a technology venture capital fund in Alexandria. He has helped to start more than 70 telecommunications and information technology companies that now employ more than 15,000 people.

Bringing together investors from across Virginia, Warner helped create four regional-based small business investment funds in Southwest Virginia, Southside, Greater Richmond, and Hampton Roads. These funds provide the critical early-stage capital needed to help local entrepreneurs get new small businesses off the ground in their home communities.

Warner has also started a number of charitable projects, including the Virginia Health Care Foundation, which has helped more than 400,000 uninsured Virginians get access to health care, and TechRiders, a program that has brought basic computer training classes to more than 5,000 people in over 150 churches and other houses of worship. He has also served on a number of charitable boards.

Demonstrating a deep commitment to higher education, Warner currently chairs the Virginia Math and Science Coalition, co-chairs Virginia’s Communities in Schools Foundation, and serves on the boards of Virginia Union University, George Washington University, and the Appalachian School of Law.

“Mark Warner’s long-time commitment to and involvement in technology, higher education and economic development, particularly in southwest Virginia, provides him with special insights to share with our graduates, as they set forth to conquer their dreams. Through his past leadership and his future aspirations for Virginia, Warner has helped build and will continue to expand the landscape within which their hopes, goals, and ambitions may be realized. He is an innovative leader, a high achiever, a dynamic individual, and an excellent speaker- the ideal orator for a college commencement.”

Dr. Jerry M. Boone
President
As chairman of the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges, Warner brought business and education leaders together to develop the Tek.Xam, a test that allows liberal arts students to demonstrate basic technology competence. It is offered on more than 60 campuses.

Warner was the first in his family to graduate from college. He completed George Washington University in 1977 and graduated from Harvard Law School in 1980. He lives in Alexandria with his wife and their three daughters.

Ferrum College is a four-year, private, co-educational, liberal arts college affiliated with the United Methodist Church.
