Holocaust Survivor Reflects on His Experience
Dr. Robert Heller, a Holocaust survivor
and F.J. Maher Professor Emeritus at Virginia Tech, will speak on
the topic A Survivor Remembers, on March 26, at 7:30
p.m. in Vaughn Chapel, Ferrum College.
Heller will give a short history of
Jews in Hungary, as well as describe the destruction of his family
by the Nazis. He will take the audience back to his familys
capture and journey to the concentration camps, their eventual rescue,
and the efforts to rebuild their lives in America.
Once again, Ferrum College has
a unique, educational opportunity to hear directly from a Holocaust
survivor--not only about his own and his family's experience but
also about the importance of making us aware as a community of some
of the lessons of the Holocaust, said Dr. Marcia Horn, coordinator
of the Holocaust team-taught course at Ferrum College.
Heller is hosted by Ferrums Holocaust course, which is offered
each spring. The course seeks to educate Ferrum students on the
overall tragedy and ultimate lessons of the Holocaust. Visits to
campus by survivors personalize the Holocaust for students and community
members who attend.
In addition to hosting survivors
stories, this year the Holocaust course also hosted a visit by The
Mill Mountain Players, presenting And Then They Came for Me: The
Story of Anne Frank.
