Dearest Mother: I’m writing to tell of the tragedy I saw today. American mothers and fathers, brothers, and sisters died today as the result of terrible violence by those who resisted their beliefs and traditions, their government, and their symbols of economic success. I am eternally saddened by the pictures of grief in my head. Yours truly, your son.

Think these are the thoughts brought to paper by the September 11 attacks on U.S. soil? Think again. These are the feelings many young men had in the 19th century War Between the States and the parallels of grief and anguish in our country will be brought to life in a nationally-recognized presentation of Civil War-era parlor music.

Professor and Mrs. Gibson, a presentation of music and thought of the mid- 1800s, will be presented at Ferrum College on November 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the College’s Sale Theatre. The Gibsons have performed across the nation and have been consultants for many war-era projects including, movies Somersby and Gettysburg.

Keith Gibson is the director of Museum Programs and Virginia Military Institute, and both he and wife, Pat, lecture and write on Civil War history and advocate battlefield preservation.
The evening of original music of the Old South will take the audience back in time to 1845 to 1865. The performance features the songs that inspired young soldiers to leave the parlor for the battlefield and which help families deal with loss.

Civil War buffs, music aficionados, theater lovers, and those who wish to take comfort in our country’s ability to survive great strife will all appreciate this unique look at our past through a musical experience.
