Deborah Suzanne White, of Seaford, has been chosen to represent the Ferrum College Class of 2001 as the senior speaker for the College’s May 13 Commencement exercises. The program will begin at 10:30 a.m. and will be located on the front lawn of the campus.

White will graduate Summa Cum Laude with a grade point average of 3.9. She majored in both religion and psychology. White has been widely recognized for her scholarship, and she recently presented as first author at the Eastern Psychology Association Conference, a rare accomplishment for an undergraduate student.

While attending Ferrum College she was inducted into the honor society Alpha Chi, served as captain of the women’s tennis team, was a member of Psi Chi, and served as the vice president of the Psychology Club.

“Deb was chosen because she’s a well-rounded person. She’s very intelligent, but also took time out to be a sociable person and a caring friend,” says Wes Starkey, president of the class of 2001.

White was recently awarded the President’s Cup Award by Dr. Jerry Boone, president of the College. The President’s Cup is the highest honor given to a student-athlete at Ferrum College.

White, a 1997 graduate of York High School, is the daughter of the Rev. Robert E. White ’64 and Melissa J. White, of Seaford. Mrs. White is a teacher at Hiden Wood Elementary School.

Mark Warner, Virginia’s democratic gubernatorial candidate, will give the Commencement address to the 120 graduates.
