A five faculty Ferrum panel will explore the issues surrounding the September 11 attacks and their ramifications on November 14 at 7:30 p.m. in Lower Franklin Hall.  Ferrum College has been called upon on several occasions since the attacks to speak to media as consultants in trying to disseminate the confusing and sometimes contradictory intelligence, which the average citizen is trying to synthesize.
The purpose of the Symposium is to offer perspective on terrorism in common terms and practical observance.

Dr. Frederic Torimiro, professor of political science, will speak on the history and future of terrorism.  Torimiro teaches a class in international terrorism at Ferrum College and will touch on how his curriculum will change and speak to both the Oklahoma City bombings and the attacks on the World Trade Centers and the Pentagon.

Dr. Carolyn Thomas, professor of environmental science, will speak on the impact and dangers of biological terrorism.  Thomas has been a leader in water quality in our region as the coordinator for the Smith Mountain Lake Quality Monitoring Center.

Dr. Kenneth McCreedy, professor of criminal justice, will speak to the local and national law enforcement issues.  McCreedy will discuss the change in duties of many law enforcement officers to meet the security needs of the New America.

Dr. John A. Williams will speak from his experience living in the Islamic world.  Williams is the College’s current Williams Distinguished Professor.  He brings the humanity of the Muslim faith and its teachings to light, as more Americans have scrutinized the Muslim world recently.

Dr. Samuel Payne, professor of history, will speak on the historical significance of the attacks and look at the past for benchmarks in how our society will deal with these issues.  Payne will also serve as moderator.

Each panelist will speak for approximately five minutes, and the floor will be open to questions and discussion.  The symposium is free and open to the public.
