Gordon C. Morse, of Williamsburg, former special assistant and speechwriter for the Baliles Administration, is the 2002 Arthur Owens guest lecturer at Ferrum College. He will speak on “The Price of Populism” in the Grousbeck Music Center auditorium on April 22, at 7:30 p.m.

Morse is an outspoken critic of the Republican fiscal policies of most of the 1990s. His latest op/ed, which ran in the March 3, 2002 Washington Post, cited “a decade of deceptive, sham politics (which has) caught up with the Commonwealth” as a major factor in Virginia’s current economic woes.

He continued, saying “almost $3 billion that, with more reasoned and responsible policymaking, could have been available now for public and higher education spending, public safety and other priorities supported by the people of Virginia.” Morse argues that the Commonwealth’s wrong turns in the previous decade are forcing Virginian’s to pay a heavy price in lost economic momentum and educational quality.

Morse began his political journey while a student at Ferrum College, graduating in 1977. He later served Ferrum College as a member of the Ferrum College Board of Trustees, and has kept in close contact with the College over the years.

The Arthur S. Owens Lecture Series was established in 1983 to provide outstanding lectures at Ferrum College in the fields of business and public administration.

Ferrum College is a four-year, private, co-educational, liberal arts college affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Ferrum offers a choice of nationally recognized bachelor’s degree programs at a cost well below the national average for private colleges.
