Kathi Rhoades personifies nature as a woman who changes her clothing with the seasons.

First place – Richard Raymond III, “Mask of Virtue”
In “Mask of Virtue,” Richard Raymond III offers a revision to a stereotypical image of the 19th century American poet Emily Dickinson.

SHORT FICTION

Honorable mention – Karl Kazaks, for “A Photographic Memory,”
According to the judge, “ A Photographic Memory” is “the story of a creative woman, a photographer, who was liberated long before the days of women’s lib”

First place – Marion A. Higgins, for “Dead Serious”
According to the judge, “Dead Serious” is a story in which a woman, Robin, who is dying of breast cancer, “is especially creative in how she gets revenge on her unfaithful husband”

Honorable mention – Jessie Tibbetts, “A Realistic and Honest Perspective:
Anne Bradstreet’s ‘Here Follow Some Verses Upon the Burning of our House,’”
Jessie Tibbetts writes about a Colonial American poet, who confronts the destruction of her house by fire and is torn between the reaction she knows her Puritan society expects of her and the intense pain of her loss

First place – Audrey Fitzgerald, “Elizabeth”
Audrey Fitzgerald’s essay explores the tension in Queen Elizabeth I’s poem “On Monsieur’s Departure” between the queen’s sense of duty and her obvious love for the subject of the poem

Ferrum College’s Fifth Annual Women’s Leadership Conference will be held on Monday, March 25, 2002, and continue through Wednesday, March 27, at Ferrum College in Ferrum, Virginia. The conference will feature a display of Rocky Mount artist and bookstore owner Ibby Greer’s artwork, an address by Ferrum alumna Willette Thompson, and keynote speaker, author Sharyn McCrumb.
