Ferrum College will hold a special Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr. Celebration on Monday, January 21 in the Panther’s Den of Franklin
Hall. The
program will include guest speaker Lt. Col. (Ret) Larry D. Moore
and performances by Ferrum students. The program begins at 7 p.m.
and the public is cordially invited to attend.
Born and raised in Pittsylvania and Franklin Counties, Moore attended Virginia
State University after graduating from Northside High School in Gretna, Virginia.
Moore is currently employed with the Franklin County Public School System as
an Assistant Principal at Franklin County High School. Before entering
the education field, he spent 25 years in the military and retired as a Lieutenant
Colonel. He earned many military awards including, the National Defense Service
Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal, Army Commendation Medal
with oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters,
Defense Superior Service Award, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and a Bronze
Star. Moore also received several civilian awards that include the St.
Louis Federal Executive Manager of the year 1995 and the Alpha Phi Alpha Martin
Luther King Leadership Award 1998. He is a strong believer in life-long learning,
has traveled extensively throughout the world, supports public schools and is
constantly talking and encouraging students to do their best in school. He is
a true believer that education is the hope and future of this country.
