The Bread and Puppet Theater, one of
the country’s oldest alternative theatrical companies, is coming to
Ferrum College on November 5th and 6th. The Bread and Puppet
Theater was
founded in 1962 by Peter Schumann and uses a variety of puppets as
well as masks, costumes, paintings, buildings and landscapes in its
productions. Through music, dance and slapstick, the acts vary
from carefully choreographed theater pieces to outdoor pageants requiring
the participation of hundreds of performers, including volunteers.
On Monday, November 5, a workshop will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00
a.m. at the Clay Studio on the campus, followed by a performance in front of
Franklin Hall. During the workshop, 20+ students and volunteers from the
community will rehearse a Cantastoria, an ancient form of storytelling
that combines text, movement, music and painting. On Tuesday, November
6th, the Divine Reality Comedy Circus will be presented at 2:30 p.m.
on the intramural softball field. Rehearsals for this performance will
take place on the softball field beginning at 10 a.m. on Tuesday. Volunteers
are encouraged to participate and are needed for both performances.
Bread and Puppet’s shows combine costumes and puppetry with a brass
band and street dancing. Their overall message centers around universal
peace and many of the shows are in keeping with Ferrum’s 2007-08 academic year
theme of social and economic justice. Students, faculty, and community
members are invited to attend both days. Jeff Dalton, Assistant Professor
of Art says, “This is an exciting opportunity for the school and community to
see a performing troupe of this caliber.” Those interested can contact
Prof. Dalton at jeffdalton@ferrum.edu or
