Ferrum College is please to announce the Wasena
F. "Buddy" Wright Lecture Series is set for Monday evening,
April 3, 2006 on the Ferrum campus. This year's lecturer is the distinguished
theologian, Dr. Stanley Hauerwas, Gilbert T. Rowe Professor of Theological
Studies at Duke University.
Professor Hauerwas has sought to recover the significance
of the virtues for understanding the nature of the Christian life.
This search has led him to emphasize the importance of the church,
as well as narrative for understanding Christian existence. His work
cuts across disciplinary lines as he is in conversation with systematic
theology, philosophical theology and ethics, political theory, as
well as the philosophy of social science and medical ethics. Dr. Hauerwas
delivered the prestigious Gifford Lectureship at the University of
St. Andrews, Scotland in 2001. He was named "America’s Best Theologian"
by Time in 2001. His book, "A Community of Character: Toward
a Constructive Christian Social Ethic," was selected as one of
the 100 most important books on religion of the 20th century.
Dr. Hauerwas will share his work during a luncheon
at 12 noon in the Ferrum College Panther's Den located in the lower
level of Franklin Hall. Cost for the luncheon is $10 per person and
is limited to the first 60 reservations. That evening at 7:00 p.m.
Professor Hauerwas will deliver the annual Wright Lecture in Vaughn
Chapel. His topic will be "Sacrificing the Sacrifices of War."
A reception for Dr. Hauerwas will follow the lecture in the fellowship
hall of Vaughn Chapel.
The Wright Lecture Series was established in 2004
