The Southeast Tunis Breeders are excited
to announce that the 2006 Tunis Field Day will be held on Saturday,
May 6th at the Blue Ridge Institute and Museum. As in previous years,
we are anticipating a time of meeting with old friends, making new
friends, sharing a little education, and concluding with a private
treaty sale.
Located on the campus of Ferrum College in
Ferrum, VA, the institute and Museum has for more than two decades
documented, interpreted, and presented the traditional life and culture
of the Blue Ridge and its people. Included in the museum is the Farm
Museum.
The Blue Ridge Farm Museum reflects the day-to-day
lifestyle of prosperous German-American farmsteaders in the Blue Ridge
in the early 1800’s. Visitors may find costumed interpreters preparing
meals over the open hearth, baking bread in an outdoor bake oven,
blacksmithing, or carrying out other household and farm chores of
the period. In the gardens and around the farm buildings, heirloom
vegetables and historic breeds of sheep (Tunis), chickens, horse,
pigs, and cattle speak the region’s agricultural heritage.
The weekend of our Field Day, the museum also
has scheduled a blacksmithing workshop. So there will be plenty to
keep you entertained.
Nestled in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains,
Ferrum is just a few miles outside of Rocky Mount, VA. Taking Route
220 it is about 35 miles south of Roanoke, VA and about 80 miles north
of Greensboro, NC.
The first weekend of May the weather should
be beautiful in the mountains so put this on your calendar and plan
to join us. Bring some sheep to sell or come prepared to buy. More
details regarding the sale will be coming.
