Ferrum College has been named as a participant
in the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) Teachers for the 21st
Century program, a new initiative developed in partnership with the
Microsoft Corporation to strengthen teacher preparation programs.
Members of Ferrum’s faculty will take part in two national meetings,
monthly online seminars, and an online community of practice. From
a field of fifty-eight applicants, Ferrum was one of only twenty institutions
selected for this initial or “leadership” phase of the initiative.
“It is a testament to Ferrum’s strong academic programs
and vision for the future that we were chosen for this honor, and
I applaud the leadership of Dr. Leslie Lambert, Vice President and
Dean of the College,” remarked Dr. Jennifer L. Braaten, President
of Ferrum College.
Dr. Richard Ekman, President of the Council of
Independent Colleges said, “I am grateful that Ferrum is willing to
play a leadership role in this initiative. CIC’s goal is eventually
to involve large numbers of independent colleges and universities
in this important work of improving the teaching in our nation’s schools.
The talents, time, and energy of this leadership group of faculty
members and institutions will be critical to the program’s success,
both within each institution and more broadly within CIC.”
Founded in 1956, the Council of Independent Colleges
(CIC) is an association of independent colleges and universities working
together to: support college and university leadership, advance institutional
excellence, and enhance private higher education's contributions to
society. CIC is the major national service organization for all small
and mid-sized, independent, liberal arts colleges and universities
in the U.S. CIC is not a lobbying organization, but rather focuses
on providing services to campus leaders as well as seminars, workshops,
and programs that assist institutions in improving educational programs,
administrative and financial performance, and institutional visibility.
Ferrum College is a four-year, private, co-educational,
liberal arts college affiliated with the United Methodist Church.
Ferrum offers a choice of nationally recognized bachelor’s degree
programs at a cost well below the national average for private colleges.
