Ferrum College is pleased to announce a partnership with the non-profit community health care provider Tri-Area who will operate a new center located in Ferrum, VA. The initial site for the Ferrum Community Health Clinic will be in the lower level of Vaughn Chapel, including Fellowship Hall. Renovation of the space will begin as early as next week, in hopes of being in readiness for fall occupancy.

The Ferrum Community Health Clinic will also provide a tremendous educational opportunity through Tri-Area’s expressed interest in exploring the involvement of Ferrum College students in internships and field-based learning at the Center.

Ferrum College is now moving on to the next level of service for our College and the community by partnering with the Tri-Area Community Health Clinic based in the community of Laurel Fork in Patrick County. Tri-Area has 20 years of experience in providing comprehensive, quality health care and will take on the management role of Ferrum’s facility.
Tri-Area Health Clinic is a partner in the Mt. Rogers Medication Assistance Program for the Mt. Rogers Planning District. This is a program designed to help uninsured individuals in Southwestern Virginia gain access to free or low cost prescription medicine.

“A health care facility has been a major part of our community and economic development discussions for the past 18 months,” said President Jennifer Braaten. “We have conducted surveys and community meetings that have indicated that this is a #1 priority.”

The College will sign a lease agreement with Tri-Area that includes repayment of these funds and gives all business, financial and administrative control to the health service professionals. The clinic will house physicians, mental health professionals, diagnostic and x-ray technology and a full service pharmacy. While Ferrum College will continue to place an emphasis on student health services, the entire community will also be able to use this facility.
The Ferrum Community Health Clinic is a part of a broader community revitalization plan Ferrum College announced last December. Since then, Ferrum College has created an advisory group entitled CommunityPLUS (after Ferrum’s own FerrumPLUS on-campus initiatives) and received a grant from the Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission for the relocation of the Blue Ridge Institute’s Farm Museum.

Ferrum College is a four-year, private, co-educational, liberal arts college affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Ferrum offers a choice of nationally recognized bachelor’s degree programs at a cost well below the national average for private colleges. For more information on Ferrum, visit www.ferrum.edu.
