The Roanoke Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross has awarded the Good Neighbor Award to Ferrum College. Ferrum was represented by Chip Phillips ,Director of Campus Safety, Telecommunications and Summer Programs at the American Red Cross Volunteer Recognition Luncheon on April 27th.

In its citation the Red Cross noted, "As Franklin County and the Roanoke Valley Chapter merged into one Chapter, the task to identify pool space in the Franklin County area became a number one priority. With no hesitation, Ferrum College immediately opened their door for our programs! They opened their facility to allow us to instruct the Free Summer Learn-to-Swim program as well as the Fall and Winter Learn-to-Swim program. Ferrum also offered the Life Guarding and Water Safety Instructor Programs as part of their curriculum. This Good Neighbor Award is given to Ferrum College for their support of the American Red Cross.”

The American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization led by volunteers and guided by its Congressional Charter and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross Movement, will provide relief to victims of disaster and help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.

The Roanoke Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross was founded in 1916, and was the first in Virginia to open a headquarters for service delivery. Shortly thereafter, chapters were founded in Botetourt and Craig Counties, and Salem. These chapters were merged with Roanoke at a later date to become the Roanoke Valley Chapter.

Today, the Roanoke Valley Chapter's area of responsibility includes Roanoke, Botetourt, Franklin, and Craig Counties, and the cities and towns therein. In March, 2005 the Franklin County Chapter merged with the Roanoke Valley Chapter. The total population in this service area is approximately 300,000.
