Showing solidarity with the tremendous educational and recreational opportunities Smith Mountain Lake affords Ferrum College; the Board of Trustees will board the Virginia Dare during their regular spring meeting. The Trustees will also be on campus for other special events this week: the dedication of the new residence hall as Arthur Hall on Friday and Ferrum’s 90th Commencement on Saturday.

Ferrum College celebrates twenty years of monitoring Smith Mountain Lake’s water quality this year through an extensive program supported by American Electric Power and other lake businesses. In February of 2006 Ferrum College Professor of Environmental Science and Biology, Dr. Carolyn Thomas, was elected to serve on the Steering Committee for the Virginia Water Monitoring Council (VWMC).

“It is our unique role and honor to represent the volunteer water quality monitoring that Ferrum and like entities accomplish. Ferrum’s twenty years of work with Smith Mountain Lake serves as an excellent example of the care a small institution can provide the environment, not leaving it to state and federal authorities alone,” said Dr. Thomas.

Special events highlighting the lake relationship this year include an Environmental Symposium with the theme Environmental Partnerships for a Sustainable Future to be held November 8th-10th. For more information on the symposium and to sign up for updates, visit: http://www.ferrum.edu/es06/.

On Friday, May 12th the new residence hall will be officially named Arthur Hall in honor of Ferrum’s 7th President, Dr. Ralph Arthur. A high-resolution photo of the building can be found here: http://www.ferrum.edu/news/2006spring/arthurhall.jpg. A high-resolution photo of Dr. Arthur is available here: http://www.ferrum.edu/news/2006spring/arthur.jpg.

On Saturday, May 13 at 10:30 a.m., Ferrum College’s 180 men and women will graduate Ferrum College in a commencement ceremony led by Dr. Jennifer L. Braaten, who is presiding over her fourth graduation as Ferrum’s 10th president. Commencement 2006 will take place on the front lawn. Baccalaureate will be held in Vaughn Chapel on Friday, May 12, at 7:30 p.m. The Commencement will be broadcast live on http://www.ferrumradio.com.
