The 33rd Annual Blue Ridge Folklife Festival
will also be the place to find rare Ossabaw Island piglets auctioned.
From 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on October 28th, 2006, the Blue Ridge
Folklife Festival will be held in Ferrum, VA.
The Ossabaw Island Hog is descended from
Spanish pigs brought to the new world over 400 years ago. A feral
breed now found mainly on Ossabaw Island off the coast of Georgia,
they are a rather small breed. When kept domestically however, they
tend to grow larger with sows reaching 120 -150 lbs. & the boars
200 – 250 lbs. The Ossabaw is on the critical list with the American
Livestock Breeds Conservancy, with fewer than 20 registered births
annually & less than 2000 global population. This litter was born
on August 9, 2006 at the Blue Ridge Farm Museum.
They are quite easy to care for requiring
less water than some other breeds of pig; they are slow growing, with
an 8-month-old animal having a slaughter weight of 50 lbs. The piglets
are currently being fed 20% Sow & Pig Ration from Southern States.
