Ferrum College has announced its first
free Podcast, available via Apple’s recently updated and free iTunes
application. The seasonally updated Podcast is available through the
official Apple Podcast Directory, where it is currently among only
a handful of official Podcasts from colleges and universities. Millions
of people around the world use iTunes and now have access to Ferrum’s
official offering.
The “Ferrum College Seasonal Event Podcast”
currently features the Commencement address of U.S. Senator John Warner,
the speeches and presentation of an Honorary Doctorate to Salem, VA’s
Cabell Brand, and a third Podcast of the entire Ferrum College 89th
Commencement Ceremony. This material will serve as the summer’s fare.
Future content will include audio of on-campus events, speeches and
performances.
A "Podcast" is a regular audio feature
you subscribe to in order to listen to a regularly updated program
at your computer or have it daily download to your iPod for portable
listening. In recent months Podcasting has taken the internet by storm
with content by amateurs and professionals alike.
To subscribe to the Podcast, download the
latest version of iTunes (4.9) and search the Podcast Directory. Ferrum
College is listed under Higher Education in Apple’s Education category.
“Featuring over 3,000 free podcasts from favorites
such as ABC News, Adam Curry, ESPN, KCRW and more, the Podcast Directory
puts all the best Podcasts in one place. Once you subscribe to a Podcast,
iTunes automatically
checks for updates and downloads new episodes to your computer,” says
Apple’s website of the Podcast Directory. For more on Podcasting,
visit Apple’s page on the subject here: http://www.apple.com/podcasting/.
iTunes is available for both Windows PC’s
and Macintosh Computers. iTunes is a versatile music and audio player
that also features the leading online digital music store currently
approaching 500 million songs purchased. iTunes may be downloaded
for free here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/.
Ferrum College’s student radio station, FerrumRadio.com
is currently moving to a new, more central space on campus in the
Fitness Center, where it will also create student podcasts and begin
work on incorporating live video with the online audio feed. The station’s
student board and advisor recently traveled to the College Media Advisor’s
national convention in New York where many of the first ideas were
planted.
