College will hold a Relay For Life walk on April 1st, 2005 beginning
at 6:00 p.m. around the baseball stadium. The American Cancer Society’s
Relay For Life will run throughout the night until 6:00a.m. April 2nd.
Entertainment, food and fellowship are provided. This is Ferrum College’s
second year participating in the largest non-profit fundraising effort
in the world.
Relay For Life is the signature activity
of the American Cancer Society. Relay is a unique event that offers
Franklin County the opportunity to celebrate cancer survivors, remember
those lost to the disease, and raise funds to help continue the fight
against cancer. It is a family-oriented, community-based event where
teams collect donations, then take turns walking or running around a
track for 24 hours. While not walking, team members and supporters,
including cancer survivors and city officials, camp out around the track
field enjoying music, food, live bands and other entertainment, camaraderie
and the knowledge that they are making a difference.
Few other events bring together all components
of a community from children to older adults like the Relay For Life.
Games, food, fun, music and activities fill the air of every Relay For
Life as everyone joins for a common cause and has fun doing it! Last
year the American Cancer Society invested more than $300 million in
research and free services to cancer patients. Thanks to your support
of the Relay For Life, the American Cancer Society can continue making
strides in the fight against cancer.
Highlights include:
Cancer Survivors’ Lap - At every Relay For Life, cancer
survivors are honored for their courage and strength by beginning the
event with an honorary lap. The individuals are celebrated in various
ways from food and t-shirts, to dances and games!
Luminaria Ceremony – Small bags with candles are placed
around the track and lit in memory of those who lost their lives to
cancer and in honor of those who have survived or who are still fighting
the disease.
The American Cancer Society is dedicated to eliminating cancer as a
major health problem by saving lives, diminishing suffering and preventing
