| Mary
Sue Terry, former Virginia attorney general and gubernatorial candidate,
will be the featured speaker for the 8th annual Women’s Leadership Conference
at Ferrum College on April 4 and 5. Terry was the first woman elected
statewide to public office in Virginia and only the second woman in
the nation to be elected attorney general. She will speak on the topic
“Examining Our Assumptions about Gender: Yours and Mine” at 3:45 p.m.
on Tues., April 5, in Sale Theatre.
The conference program also features
two distinguished local alumni as speakers. Joyce Moran, executive officer
of Children’s Advocacy Programs (CAPs) of the Blue Ridge, is a 1985
(A.A.) and 1994 (B.A.) graduate of Ferrum College. Jon Morris, also
a 1994 graduate, is executive director of Support to Eliminate Poverty
(STEP), Inc. Moran and Morris will speak on “Leadership through Service”
at 11 a.m. on Tues., April 5, in Sigmon Recital Hall. Both Moran and
Morris have degrees in psychology from Ferrum.
The 2005 conference will kick off on
Monday, April 4, with an entertainment event in Sigmon Recital Hall
at 8 p.m. The program will include selections of vocal and instrumental
music, poetry, and drama performed by members of the college and local
communities.
Conference sessions on Tuesday, April
5, will focus on gender issues in the workplace and the home, both in
the United States and in various other cultures. Sessions will be held
in Grousbeck Hall and Stanley Library.
Sessions were selected and organized
by the conference planning committee, composed of faculty, staff, and
community members, including Dr. Lana Whited (English; conference coordinator),
Ms. Nell Fredericksen (owner of Sugar Grove Studios), Dr. M. Katherine
Grimes (English), Dr. Tina Hanlon (English), Dr. Delia Heck (economics),
Ms. Leslie Holden (Career Services Center), Dr. Marcia Horn (English),
Dr. Sharon Stein (psychology), and Dr. Andrea Zuschin (Student Affairs).
The conference is sponsored by the Ferrum
College Integrated Programming Board, The Iron Blade, Spectrum, Students
in Free Enterprise (SIFE), and the Student Success program. There is
no cost for the conference except a $5 fee for lunch, payable at the
